There was no use sleeping, and I didnât really need it to begin with. I just sat atop a three tiered treehouse some of the shifters had built along the lake for their pups. The clouds had moved off, and the sky was full of stars that reflected off of the still, glassy surface of the water.
It was a lucky find, coming upon this treehouse. Up so high, it didnât feel like the walls were closing in around me, nothing but the smell of shifters and ash in the air. Up here, it was a little fresher. Across the water, I could see the smouldering pyres where the dead pups burned. I felt like a real shite about the whole thing. It was the first time in years Iâd felt true guilt. Remembering the way those pups had been executed like dogs on the street made me want to burn the city to ash with all the humans locked inside the walls. Iâd seen many cities fall in such a way, and never before had I imagined Iâd enjoy such a sight. Maybe I was getting bitter with age. Or maybe I was just tired of it all.
Through the silence of the forest, I heard feet pounding the dirt. Someone was approaching swiftly, and from the sound of it, they were hauling ass. My body was on alert in an instant. Most of the shifters were asleep by now, and none of the pups shouldâve been out this way at this time of night. Although we were close to the pack village, the forest wasnât exactly the safest place to go traipsing through alone. Inhaling deeply as the wind brushed my face, recognition dawned, just as the lone figure broke through the tree line and headed straight for the water.
I watched from above as her moonlight colored hair flowed behind her. She was wearing all blackâa jumper and some running shoes. Serenity slowed to a jog, slowing down bit by bit until she reached the water, and then she stopped. I could hear from the steady thump of her heart that she wasnât out of breath in the slightest, telling me she was transitioning much smoother and much faster than Iâd anticipated. Drinking Atlasâ blood seemed to be speeding the process along.
I couldnât help but think back to our last moments alone in her holding cell, before it all went to hell. I could still feel the smoothness of her skin and the bliss of her heat. My fangs ached as I pictured the way sheâd let my blood dribble down her mouth and neck. Those black and red eyes contrasted so deliciously with her angelic hair, sometimes it hurt to look at her for too long. Perhaps I was growing a bit attached to the lass. I knew it was a bad idea to touch her like that, and for the last few days, itâd been haunting me. I didnât regret it in the slightest, I just regretted what had become of it now.
