Loud noises, a splitting headache, and a muddled vision of blood and fire clouded my senses when I opened my eyes. I tried to think, to make sense of the loud conversation outside. My mind refused. It drifted instead. I was left with an intense desire to sink into the darkness that beckoned me from within.
It took a while to remember where I was, and how I got there. It took me longer to recognize the voice outside the door.
âIan.â Only a whisper escaped my parched mouth.
Minutes passed before I found the strength to prop myself up on my elbows and blinked to clear my sight. I knew I had to get to the door and let Fischer in. But knowing was one thing, making it happen was another. My brain seemed to have frozen somehow, as had my muscles, and it took immense effort to even sit up. I couldnât see clearly and as soon as I took my first step, I crumpled to the floor. I lay there, my face sinking into the plush, blood-red rug, unable to pick myself up.
Nothing made sense. The room looked comfy, so I had to have rested through the night. Yet I had no strength left in me to sit up straight, let alone stand on my feet. Even keeping my eyes open was a battle. What had happened to me? It must have taken me five minutes to scrunch up my strength again. Gritting my teeth, I dragged myself halfway across the floor and crawled across the remainder, panting in exhaustion when I reached it. I clawed at the door, sinking my fingers into its carvings so I could pull myself up. I wasnât sure how long it took me, but I managed to turn the locks and pull the door open.
A scruffy-looking Fischer, his hair disheveled, stood scowling at a man I had seen before. Donovan . . . that was what Eve had called him . . . stood with his head slightly bowed but hardly looked apologetic. Fischerâs face lit up as soon as he saw me and he rushed over to my side before I could blink.
âYou okay?â he asked, grabbing me by my shoulders. The curtain of red that hung over my senses seemed to lighten a tad at his touch. I nodded slowly.
âHad nightmares?â
Vague memories lurked behind a dark curtain in my head. I had seen something, but I couldnât recall what.
âDunno,â I whispered.
Fischer dug into his pocket and pulled out a bar of chocolate. He unwrapped it in a hurry and pushed a big chunk into my mouth. âChew it,â he ordered. Bitterness filled my mouth but I followed Fischerâs order to a T.
âCanât believe you kept her in the freaking Lotus Room,â Fischer growled at Donovan. âWhatâs next, huh? Spot executions?â
Donovan shrugged. âNot my decision, Ian. Iâm just the messenger. You have a problem, take it up with Conroy.â
Conroy . . . I had heard that name before. It came to me as
