Chapter 15

I floated around the house for an hour, humming as I tidied up for the party, bursting with an overwhelming happiness. I almost rang Aunt Evie to tell her I’d just carped the stuffing out of her diem, but in the end I decided this feeling needed time to percolate. The moment felt too fresh to share just yet.

Eventually reality intruded on my blissed-out state. I had to make two pavlovas for dessert before the guests arrived, and I had no fresh fruit and cream to decorate them with. And nowhere near enough eggs. I also wanted some decorations for the tables and maybe a few extra glasses. There was a Target in Waterloo Bay, so I decided to go there to pick up some cheap glassware and serving dishes before heading to the supermarket.

Target’s car park was full, but I found a spot in the street around the corner. Waterloo Bay wasn’t terribly big, so it wasn’t far to walk. But when I got out of the car, I realised that Beach Bods, the gym where Kai worked, was just down the street.

I could drop in—it would only take a few minutes. And do what? Demand Kai confess to killing Sam? Detective McGovern would be absolutely thrilled to have me poking around in his investigation. The sensible thing to do would be to head for Target and get my shopping done so I could go home and make pavlovas.

Sensible was kind of overrated.

Before I’d had time to think better of it, my feet had carried me right to the entry of Beach Bods. I’d met Andrea and Nick outside before, but I’d never been in. The glass doors swished open at my approach, letting out a blast of air-conditioned air that smelled strongly of chlorine and more faintly of heat gel and sweat.

The floor was made of some kind of black rubbery stuff that gave slightly underfoot. High energy music was pumping from overhead speakers and past the reception area I could see a large room full of treadmills, bikes and other exercise equipment. A blond girl in bike shorts and a blue T-shirt emblazoned with the Beach Bods logo was behind the large black counter. She smiled brightly as I entered.

“Can I help you?”

For the second time that day, my brain switched off completely, leaving me staring blankly at her.

“Is, um, Kai in?” I managed at last.

The faintest of frowns appeared on her tanned forehead. “Do you have an appointment?”

Inspiration arrived in the nick of time. “No, I was hoping he could show me around. I’ve been thinking of joining a gym and getting a personal trainer and a friend of mine recommended him.”

“Is your friend a member here?”

“Yes.” I paused. “Or, at least, she was.”

She eyed me suspiciously. “What’s her name?”

“Sam. Sam Middleton.”

“Oh.” Her eyes widened and she leaned across the desk confidentially. “Oh, honey, I’m not sure Kai is the right person to show you around. Perhaps you could come back tomorrow and I can get one of the other PTs to help you?”

That sounded like Kai was here.
