Thirteen

The first thing Bliss did every working morning after sleeping at the Leyton flat was to return the car. His station had their own small yard for storage and repairs, but the main larger complex used by several nicks in the area backed onto the railway line at the Limehouse Basin. There he left the Sierra and drove away again in his own Vauxhall Cavalier, swapping Vincent Styles for Jimmy Bliss in the process. It was a tiresome routine, but one he had not yet neglected. He knew the potential danger associated with him accidentally pulling up to collect Hazel or outside his parents’ house in the Cosworth, and he had a cover story prepared in case he slipped up. It was something he would rather not have to lie his way out of, so he maintained his focus.

On those nights when he stayed at the flat, people close to him made assumptions. He reckoned his father had a rough idea of what was going on, but his mother assumed he was either at Hazel’s place or sleeping on a friend’s settee. His girlfriend hopefully didn’t concern herself with his whereabouts at all. His was a precarious existence, and one he’d already decided he would prefer not to repeat in the future. He knew of officers who went deep, fully immersing themselves in their legend, living the life twenty-four hours a day. It was not for him, especially with his relationship with Hazel still so relatively fresh and full of possibilities.

Bliss had clawed himself out of temporary unconsciousness shortly after being choked out. The moment he realised he was alive, his hands went to his throat but found no cord. His skin was tender to the touch, and when he checked in the bathroom mirror he saw a collar of rough, red welts. Over several cups of tea he asked himself why he wasn’t dead. The conclusion he reached was that his arrival home had disturbed whoever had broken in, at which point they must have secreted themselves behind the sofa. The choking had been applied to put him out of action temporarily, not to cause any lasting harm. All of which told him he’d been right all along: the O’Shea brothers were suspicious, had checked up on him, and he had survived because they found nothing to back up their suspicions and still needed him for the safe on Friday night.

Having showered and shaved, Bliss studied the chafed weals around his neck. Whatever had been used on him had been rough, which told him more that he wished to dwell upon. He had nothing like that lying around in the flat, so whoever had broken in had brought the cord with them. That meant one thing: if they had found any evidence suggesting he was someone other than Vincent Styles, their intention had been to kill him. Bliss made a mental note to thank the team who’d put together the legend and the documentation that went with it.

At the station that morning he immediately sought out DCI England.
