WAIT FOR THE BEEP
Beep-Beep! Beep-Beep! Beep-Beep!â
Randallâs pager exploded for the tenth time in less than five minutes.
He reached down without looking and pressed a button that made the beeping stop. A young couple seated at the next table cut their eyes at him, not at all thrilled about the constant interruptions to their chicken-flavored love affair.
In fact, a number of diners at the Roscoeâs Chicken ân Waffles near the corner of Pico and LaBrea were thoroughly annoyed. Since his arrival, Randallâs beeper had gone off twice during the first twenty minutes, and now it was out of control. While the customers were used to Hollywood types who came in talking on their cell phones and sporting overblown attitudes, ten beeps in only four and a half minutes was taking things a bit too far.
âHer again?â Steve asked, biting into a chicken wing. He had unbuttoned the cuffs of his white dress shirt, rolled up the sleeves, and was digging deeply into his meal.
âWho else,â Randall replied. âIâm just wondering when Meredithâs going to get the hint that Iâm not calling back.â
Randall picked at his half-eaten chicken. He was much too hyped to have an appetite, which was a surprise. After the day heâd had, he expected to be a lot hungrier than he was.
âYou should have done like me and turned your pager off.â Steve reached out with greasy fingers for his glass of lemonade. âThe moment I got in your car, I eighty-sixed that puppy. Iâll be damned if Iâm gonna let her page me to death.â
âActually, Iâm kind of enjoying it, even though this crowd looks like theyâre about ready to lynch me.â
Randall gave the couple beside him a quick glance. Thankfully, they were making eyes at each other, not him.
âWhat pleasure would you get out of being paged by that bitch?â Steve mumbled, crumbs dropping out of his mouth, staining his shirt with grease.
âHave some class, player.â Randall smirked, watching the crumbs bounce off Steveâs chest and hit the table. âCheck yourself. You donât look like youâre about to be one of the heads of a soon-to-be-powerful company.â
Steve laughed, looking around to see who had noticed. He dabbed at his mouth with a napkin and brushed away the crumbs.
âThat doesnât happen often.â
âConsidering how well you were brought up, it shouldnât happen at all.â
âItâs the company I keep,â Steve replied.
Randall chuckled.
His pager went off again. The young couple flashed him a fiery look. He quickly pressed the button to silence the beeping.
âJust put it on vibrate,â Steve suggested. He dug into his waffle, which was swimming in butter and syrup, and closed his eyes as he savored the bread.
Randall sighed, pulled the pager from his hip, checked the number, changed the alert to vibrate, then put the pager back in place.
âThe Diabolical?â Steve asked, still smacking his lips from the syrup.
âYou know it.â
âNow tell me again, why is it youâre enjoying getting all these beeps?â
Steve took another drink of lemonade.
âI never said,â Randall replied. âYour crumbs distracted me. Itâs because I havenât been sweated this much since I was in college.
