At Victory Station, Dis loaded his jacket pockets with candy from a vending machine and went to a payphone, cradling the receiver against his shoulder. “Hi, Zade. My friend Bone and I are having dinner at the Melborn, if you would like to join us at eight. Good. See you then.” He hung up and took the square side exit out. Office workers were flooding into the station on the descending side of the ramp as he emerged onto the street. He lobbed a candy bar into the underbrush where the children had tried to knock him over a few days before.

A soda can made a tinny noise as it bumped along the steps of the Victory Monument. Dis looked up at the base of the marble seat and prodded the can with the toe of his boot before going up the monument steps. He ran his fingertips through the empty groove behind the seat. Dusting his hands on his pant legs, he walked back down and sat down on the steps, pinning the soda can under his heel.

He tossed a coin. He let it hit the marble step and tumble to stillness before he picked it up. Holding it between his thumb and forefinger, Dis raised the coin in front of him, obscuring the front of the Pierce Tower from his view. He shifted it from his right eye to his left and set it back in his pocket. He deposited a candy bar on the step and slowly made his way over to the building.
