“Oh, you must be Doc B’s daughter. We heard about you.”

The man chuckled and floated off.

“That was scary!” Gracie shivered. “We could have gotten caught.”

“You are a surprisingly good liar,” Dmitry said with a grin.

Ugh. That was not how I wanted to impress Dmitry. I didn’t mean to lie. The words just shot out of my mouth. And it was only 50 percent of a lie, because I really did want to find my dad and see if he could help me fix this. I wasn’t lying, I was wishing.

Still, I wished I hadn’t said it. Now I was a tablet snatcher and a fibber.

“I just want to get this tablet to my mom,” I said. “What if she can’t start her experiment without it? What if she gets in trouble? What if she sends me back to live with Nana Sherry and her yappy little dog who hates kids?”

Gracie took my arm. “We’re almost there, Abby. No need to worry about that zappy dog.”

“Zappy?” I said. “No, yappy.”

“Oh,” Gracie said, “I thought your grandmother had a broken robot dog!”

Now I couldn’t stop thinking about a messed-up robot version of Nana Sherry’s dog. It made me giggle.

Suddenly Gracie flattened herself against the wall with a squeak. She pulled the rest of us back too.

“What’s going on?” I whispered. “Is someone after us? Are we under attack? Did something escape from the lab?”

“Worse,” Gracie whispered back. She pointed at a scientist zipping down the corridor. He wore lab goggles and studied his tablet without even looking up. His nose and chin looked a lot like Gracie’s and Claire’s.
