CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

Catalina moved with speed and grace. Discarding her heels she sprinted through the crowds of people, dodging left and right to avoid bumping into anyone as she ran. Swann, and more to the point Vasille, were not as agile. As they lumbered through the crowds, the irritable chants and groans became more frequent as they barged their way through the crowds.

Swann kept up with Catalina easier than Vasille. Hindered by his hulking frame Vasille barged his way past people sending scores flying in every direction as he gave chase.

As Swann kept his focus and attention on Catalina, he could not help wondering why she had presented herself to them. Her actions had been more about drawing them into this chase than hiding from them. Both Swann and Vasille had agreed the chances of finding Catalina would be an almost impossible task against the scores of people lining the streets. Instead, however, she had goaded them, and both had obliged.

Between his ragged breaths and groaning, legs Swann could not cast aside the feeling that something was not right. Ignoring the burning questions Swann could not deny his urge to give chase, it was a hunter and prey.

Catalina dodged into a narrow doorway, pushing aside the door with ease. Between a row of excited heads and waving flags, Swann caught sight of Catalina’s sudden dive and altered his own course. Paying no attention to Vasille behind him, Swann judged his movement wrong.

Swann felt his feet tangle with one of the crowd and his momentum threw him off balance. Swann landed on the cobbled floor and skidded towards the raised step towards the doorway. The protruding stone step slammed into his left shoulder and the left side of his head. Swann’s head swam, and a wave of nausea washed over him.

Looking up and through the open door, Swann caught sight of Catalina as she propelled herself two at a time up the stairway at the far side of the Parisian building.

‘Shit,’ Swann scowled as he righted himself.

Propelling himself upwards and onwards Swann burst into the building. Still dizzy from the blow to his head Swann wiped away a trickle of blood that oozed from a jagged cut above his left eye. Staggering from the disorientation, Swann smeared fingertip trails of blood along the corridor wall as he continued the chase.

‘Swann?’ Vasille’s yelled, his voice unrecognisable above the chants of the crowds.

‘Here! In here.’ He bellowed back but did not wait to see if Vasille had heard him.

Swann scrambled up the staircase, dragging himself up via the wooden handrail to gain what extra leverage and speed he could. As the stairs wound around the four sides of the building stairwell, Swann caught sight of Catalina two flights above.

‘Stop,’ he growled but knew she would not listen.

Catalina paused for a second and peered over the bannister. Swann continued to move as she watched him round another level, gaining ground on her.

‘Keep coming Michael Swann,’ she goaded.

‘How do you know my name?’ Swann huffed as he continued to scramble up.
