The occupants of the darkened Firebird watched the coroner’s van roll up, two technicians and a man in a short-sleeved shirt get out, speak with the sheriff’s deputies outside Cheri’s, then head down the alley and disappear around back. So doing, they edged past a tall man with blond hair who got into the white pickup he’d arrived in, spun a U on the deserted street, and roared up Edison.

“Follow him?”

The man riding shotgun shook his head. “We know where he’s going. Besides, he’s no threat.”

“You don’t think Alvarez dropped the dime?”

The shotgun rider thought a moment. “Nah. Like he said, he’d have had the money on him.”

“So why the frown? It’s over. One more tóxico checkin’ out.”

“The way that damned dog’s eyes kept looking at me. Like it was alive or something.” A beat went by while they took in the activity up the street. “Who’d want something like that around anyhow?”

The driver shook his head. “Fuck if I know. Got some weirdo shit out there.”

“Tell me about it.” Raul Garza glanced at his watch. “Damn, check the time. Old lady’s going to be pissed if I don’t take care of business tomorrow.”

“Business…”

“Dancing. Tomorrow’s our anniversary.” He flipped open the cell phone and pressed the button for a preprogrammed number as the driver started the car and eased away from the curb, gentle on the gas to keep the big engine quiet. “I hate dancing.”

“No shit,” the driver came back. “The endless fucking macarena.”
