L'Opera Bastille is sold out and I calculate that Collette must have bought these tickets some time ago. One can't help but speculate as to whether the good lady anticipated my arrival, or whether she had originally intended to invite some other admirer to accompany her to the show. Regardless of the intent, one feels honoured to be arriving alongside such an elegant and well-groomed Parisian lady and we take our seats with relish. All around us, couples are dressed up to the nines, smiling, awaiting some sign that the curtain is about to go up, revealing sights and sounds to entice and entertain.
As the orchestra starts up, with a good deal of relish and pomp, I open up the glossy programme to Act One and peruse the order of arias, only just managing to memorise them before the lights go out and the heavy velvet drapes part. Glancing to my left side, I appreciate Madame Joubert's profile for a second or two, her neatly chignoned hair, pale white neck and small delicate ears adorned with tiny pearl studs. This woman is so perfect that my mind wanders away from The Merry Widow and begins tricking me again, allowing me to believe that perhaps, in some fortunate circumstance, we could have a future.
âIs everything alright, Colin?â she whispers, placing a slim hand upon my jacket sleeve, perhaps having noticed my lack of concentration on the musical extravaganza before us.
âYes, my dear, perfect,â I tell her, also keeping my voice low. âI'm enjoying tonight very much.â
For a moment, Collette leaves her fingers resting upon my arm, but then, as the actors take up their roles, she moves them, grasping her fingers together and pursing her lips in delight.
