Chapter 6

The following day Astair and Naemi reached the lobby just as Elsa ended what looked like a tense phone call. Astair could tell something was wrong when her mother immediately avoided eye contact as she approached the front desk.

“Is everything okay?” She asked as her mother forced a smile. Astair knew better. Her mother was wrinkling her brow, and she was fidgeting. She was randomly tucking ringlets of hair into her bun.

“Yes, Astair. Everything’s fine. You and Naemi going into town?” Elsa cleared her throat and waved at Naemi without looking at her daughter.

“Mom? What is it?”

“There have been accusations, Astair.”

“What kind of accusations? Did they find the person that took Mena’s magics?”

“No. Not exactly. There were witnesses that you and Mena got into a heated argument, which might have caused you to act against her.”

“Wait, what?”

“Complete nonsense, of course, but your father and I have been summoned by the coven.” She paused, “and then a private meeting with the high priestess.”

“You have got to be kidding me. I can barely do a basic spell, and you are telling me our coven members things I’m advanced enough to steal someone’s magics? That makes no sense.”

“It doesn’t, and I’m sure it’s people overreacting. Your father and I will straighten everything out. Don’t you worry about it. Her mother cupped her face in her hands and then rubbed Naemi’s shoulder. “So, where are you two young ladies off to?”

Astair was still visibly upset, so Naemi smiled and wrapped an arm around her friend. “We were going to go in town for a bit. I haven’t been around much. Astair is going to show me around, maybe grab some lunch. Right, Astair?”

Astair shook her head.

“Astair, please don’t let this gossip ruin your day. I said your father and I will sort this all out. No one will even remember that your name was brought up by tomorrow morning. Have fun, girls.”

Her mother shooed them away.

“Wow. Can you believe that? I struggled to soundproof your room, but the coven thinks I was mad enough to steal Mena’s magics. What a load of crap.”

“Astair, it’s just like your mom said, gossip. Let them talk. We know the truth, and I have seen how much this has bothered you and what you are willing to do to help your sister. Come show me the wonderful Shademire.”
