Chapter Thirteen

Davis turned into the parking lot of a large, well-known furniture store and parked the car. “Ready to go shopping?”

“They’re going to have furniture for my nursery here? I’ve bought furniture here and never saw anything like that.”

“You weren’t looking in the right section.” Davis slid from the driver’s seat and rounded the hood to let her out.

“Really?”

He just winked and took her hand. Sue followed him into the store and past the friendly greeter. Davis walked purposefully to a door marked Employees Only. Leaning back, she resisted when he led her to it.

“That’s only for people who work here,” she hissed.

Davis didn’t answer. He patted her bottom as he held her gaze. When he tugged her forward a second time, Sue swallowed hard and allowed him to usher her through the doorway. She looked behind her as the door closed, waiting for someone to yell at them, but no one reacted like they were invading restricted space.

Turning around, she expected to see a stockroom with boxes. Sue felt her mouth fall open as she looked at the enchanting display in front of her. It was a store for Littles. Stuffies lined shelves in front of her. Clothing displays filled a section on the right. It looked like any commercial store. Groups of furniture occupied the left side of the store, set up like nurseries and playrooms. The only difference was the size of the cribs and other beautiful choices.

“Where would you like to start? Should we pick out furniture for your nursery or some clothes for you to have at Daddy’s house?”

“Cribs,” she answered, drawn to the gorgeous wooden beds that she’d fantasized about after delving into stories.

Davis let her lead him from arrangement to arrangement. Sue looked for prices, but nothing was labeled. She loved a grouping made of white oak. It had a definite wood grain through it and wasn’t too light or too dark.

“How do you know how much things are?” she asked.

“Daddies worry about that. I think this one is your favorite,” Davis suggested, rubbing his hand over the smooth wood. “I like this too. We’ll need a crib, changing table, rocker, and a play table and chairs. What color do you want the pad to be?”

“The pad?” she echoed.

“Come see.” Davis tugged her over to the changing table and picked up a card lying on the cushioned top. His finger ran over the choices. “Which is your favorite?”

“Could I have the one that’s pink with the red hearts?”

“I like that one, too. That’s our choice,” Davis said with a wink. “Let me tell them what we’ve selected and then we’ll go look at clothes before stopping at the stuffies to get a new friend.”

He waved at a salesman who immediately came to their side. Sue looked at the floor in embarrassment as Davis placed their order. What could that man think of her?

“Of course, sir. I’m so glad you found the perfect set for your Little girl. I have this exact same furniture in my Little boy’s nursery.
