Rhett lived on one of those quaint, tree-lined streets in the West Village with cobblestones, celebrities walking their dogs, and boutique shops that need to sell only two pieces a month to survive. He had the entire floor of a brick townhouse all to himself, but he always had peopleâmodels, bottle girls, and other glamorous socialitesâinside.
âYo,â he said, opening his door in nothing but a pair of plaid pajamas. His eyes were bloodshot.
âWhatâs up, man?â I dropped my bag and sank into his soft leather couch.
âIâm losing it and didnât know who else to call,â he said, arms crossed as he paced around the room. âWeâre getting eaten alive. By everyone. The media. The board. Celebrities. Do you know what Mark Zuckerberg said about us? Mark fucking Zuckerberg of all people. That weâre the reason tech startups are getting a bad rap. Can you believe it? Us? When Facebookâs been stealing usersâ information from fucking day one. I ought to find him and beat the shit out of him.â
âWhoa, slow down, man. This is war, remember? This shit happens, and we canât let it get to us, just like youâve said this whole time.â
He sat down on the polished hardwood floor, his head in his hands.
I walked over to the kitchen and grabbed some expensive faux-Âgourmet coffee and put it in the machine.
âItâll be okay,â I said, watching his shoulders shake up and down. He was sobbing. Loudly.
âGet up.â I picked him up and threw him onto the couch. âAnd drink this.â I handed him a cup of the over-roasted sludge.
âThanks,â he said, wiping his eyes. âLucien and the rest of the board said that if we donât close a significant amount of cash this month Iâm out.â
âWhat do you mean out?â
âFired, Buck. They said Iâm fired at the end of the month if we canât pull it together. All of this shit, itâs just the excuse they were waiting for to get me out. Theyâve always hated us, and I knew it, but now I really know it.â
âBut how can they fire you, Rhett? Donât you and Chris own a majority of Sumwun?â
Rhett tried to muster a smile. âSometimes I forget youâre still so young. Of course we donât own a majority of the company. All of those millions we raised came at a cost. The more money we needed, the bigger the piece of the pie we gave away until we were left with less than them. Plus,â he said, sinking deeper into the couch, âChris is on their side.â
I reflexively took a sip of my coffee and spit it out. âHold on, Rhett. So why donât we say fuck them? After all of the cash weâve closed over the past few months, canât we just survive off that?â
âNo, Buck.â He shook his head. âThatâs not how it works. Plus, we donât have any cash. Weâve been living from hand-to-mouth for the past quarter.â
âHand-to-mouth? Weâve closed over a million dollars a month since I started. Weâve been hitting the numbers.
