Chapter Eleven

“I’m worried about Justin.”

Dr. Pittman’s eyes were red-rimmed and bright as he glanced from Tiff to her mother. He’d come to Raven Farms fifteen minutes ago, saying he needed to talk. Rosemary immediately put on a pot of coffee and filled a plate with a selection of her homemade cookies. A supply was always kept in the freezer, and after less than a minute in the microwave they were fully defrosted.

“Of course you are, Clark.” Tiff’s mom put her hands over the doctor’s. “We all are.”

Tiff’s heart ached for her mother. She’d only just learned that her true biological son was still alive. And now she had to worry he would die of his lymphoma, or some complication related to the cancer. On top of all that, she was consoling the man who had conspired to switch the babies in the first place.

Her mother’s ability to forgive was amazing. Tiff was having a harder time welcoming Clark to the family, but for her mom’s sake, and for Justin and Geneva as well, she was trying.

“Justin is strong and he has excellent doctors,” she pointed out, hoping to relieve the stress for both of them.

“Medically speaking, he is in good hands,” Dr. Pittman agreed. “But this…this terrible thing that happened to Willow. It’s got him so upset. He isn’t sleeping or eating properly. When I first heard the news I was sad, of course. But I also hoped that not having to worry about losing Geneva would bring him relief.”

Tiff blinked and drew back a little. Of course they’d all been relieved Geneva would stay with Justin, but it felt callous to put into words. And did Clark seriously think his son wouldn’t grieve?

A movement at the window caught her eye and she turned to see Kenny walk past on his way to the barn. He wasn’t limping at all anymore and she was glad for him. She waited to see if he would drop in to say hi, but he didn’t even glance in the direction of their house.

It was Saturday and she’d been hoping he would invite her out for once. But clearly Kenny ‘needed his space.’ His job interview was lined up for next Monday, but Tiff didn’t hold out hopes that would change anything. If he didn’t get the job, they’d still be stuck in this awkward situation where he played the role of medieval serf and she was the aloof lady of the manor. If he did get the job, he’d be leaving Lost Trail and would be out of her life anyway.

She pushed aside the depressing thought and turned back to their guest who was silently staring into his coffee cup. She did have sympathy for him, but at that moment she wanted to shake his shoulders. “Of course Justin is sad. He and Willow have been friends most of their lives. He cared about her enough to marry her and adopt her daughter.”

The doctor frowned, shook his head. “I shouldn’t speak ill of her now, but Willow was a user.
