Chapter Eighteen

Sleep.

That’s what I was trying to do as I toss and turn on the bed. Pulling a pillow over my head, I try and ignore whoever was on the other side of my door. A loud thudding noise continues every few seconds that’s sure enough to rattle my door. Maybe if I play dead then they’ll go away and I can try and go back to sleep.

Apparently, that wasn’t happening, though. I hear the door open and then the pillow that was barely blocking out the noise is ripped from my grasp as whoever was banging on the door stands above me. I rub at my eyes, trying to get rid of the blurriness until Ryder’s figure standing over me appears.

“What do you want?” I groan and sit up in the bed. “It’s night time. People are supposed to be asleep when it’s dark outside!”

“I know,” Ryder sighs. “But it’s a practice drill for the Guardians in case of an attack and you’re supposed to be protecting me, remember?”

I flop backwards. “I don’t want to get up. I finally got comfy.”

Ryder gives me a sullen look. “Yeah, I saw Gage help bring you back here earlier. Did he help with the sweats and t-shirt for pjs?”

“Don’t be a jerk,” I scowl. “I’m doing a lot better on my walking, it just helps to have someone to lean on.”

“Sure,” Ryder grumbles. “Come on, we’re supposed to be outside with the others.”

“There’s supposed to be a blizzard tonight,” I balk. “You can’t be serious. Go have Bane protect you, or your brother. I can barely walk down the hallway, what makes you think I’m going to make it outside in the snow?”

Ryder sighs and sits down on the end of the bed. “We should probably talk.”

“About what?”

“Your mating.”

I glare at him. “Not this again. I’m not Erik’s mate, I don’t care what you or anyone else has to say. Trust me, I would know if I was mated to him. I don’t know why he’s lying, but he is. I thought you believed me.”

“I do,” Ryder says softly. “I know you and I know you wouldn’t react this way if he was really your mate. But I don’t know what you want me to do about it, Dani.”

“You don’t have to let me be mated to him. You can overrule it. Nullify it.”

“You know I can’t do that without proof.”

“Yes, you can,” I snap. “I’m in your pck so therefore I’m under your protection, not his. You can tell him to so stuff himself.”

He pulls in a deep breath and lets it out. “Look, I know you don’t want to belong to him. I know you don’t feel safe with him or connected to him at all. But you have tattoos, Dani. It’s too much of a coincidence.”

“I’m barely around Erik, there’s just no way the mating marks appear after meeting him less than a handful of times.”

“Then there’s no explanation. If I’m going to annul his claim, I need to have proof.
