Chapter Three

Smythe took control of his new suit and allowed himself the time needed to adjust to the feel of it. He’d obviously taken a few minutes to read the specs, but that could never replace the real thing. Technically, this wasn’t the real thing, but it was as close as people would get without actually charging into the Zoo themselves.

While he still had trouble with the notion of a jungle in the middle of the Sahara, after their first dismal run in the pods, Young had decided a little information might be beneficial to their training. He’d cheerfully—and with what might have been a smug smirk—provided them with reading material that he assured them would change their way of thinking. While the details themselves had stretched the limits of what might be even remotely believable, it had definitely made them take the scenarios they encountered far more seriously in later sims.

He glided through the first few motions required to test his mobility. The specs on this piece were for a new hybrid-style suit. It lacked the firepower and the armor of the gunner suits but was said to be harder-hitting than the usual specialist suits. The Jack of all trades of the suit world, he decided. This one was new, of course, given that it was the first hybrid suit that made use of nuclear powering to be sustainable for years without needing to recharge.

They'd never had much in the line of power complaints, though. Even the hybrid suits didn’t need that much to run, so the battery packs they already had were more than enough to last longer than he would ever want to be in a combat situation at any given time. A couple of months, the statements told him. He reminded himself that he couldn’t ever trust blurb provided by the companies that actually made suits, but Campbell had gone through it carefully. They had added power redundancies to the joints to gather power from his own movements in addition to solar panels along the back section of the armor during their time in the Middle East.

Yes, he was lucky to have the likes of Campbell on his team. In fact, he was lucky to have virtually everyone who was on his team—Campbell, Dutch, Murphy, and himself. They wouldn’t fit in anywhere else, but in this little squad, they somehow did. He liked that they had their own kind of identity like that. Their worth was far more than the sum of the parts.

Dutch looked at him from where he wore the tank they called a suit these days. Hell, the right arm looked like it had been formed into a makeshift shield. He was testing it and rushed it forward a step or two before he raised an eyebrow in query.

“Are you good to go, Smythe?” he asked and shifted into his business tone as he drew the massive assault rifle that would be too big on most helicopters.

“Lead the way, Dutch,” he replied and stepped behind the man.
