Chapter 20

Nolan

Kelci and Cece are coloring no more than five feet from me, and I watch them. Cece looks just like her mother, and I find it impossible to look away. Now that we’re on the private jet to Barbados, it’s hard to believe this is it. Once the trip is over, I will have to find a reason that Kelci and I part ways. The one problem that lies with that is that I’ve gotten closer to her over the past few weeks. While I’ve only had one interaction with Cece, I’ve even imagined what it’d be like if this were real. To have to give that all up is going to be something that I might even miss.

“What are you doing?”

I shake out of my thoughts and see Kelci gawking at me. “What do you mean?”

“You’re looking at us with this weird expression.”

I shrug. “I didn’t know that. Would you like something to drink? I can ring for the stewardess.” I quickly change the subject. Kelci is doing me a favor, and that’s all we need to say. Now that Daniel knows we’re engaged. He works for Krenshaw, bringing more pieces of the puzzle together. Everything is running smoothly, and there’s no reason to suggest otherwise.

“We’re good,” Kelci says, turning back to the picture Cece is coloring. She then stands and moves over to the seat next to me while Cece doesn’t look up. “Sabrina’s flight should arrive sometime tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for suggesting that she comes along to help nanny Cece on this trip. It will be nice to have her there.”

“You’re welcome. I don’t know why she didn’t agree to ride in the jet with us, though.” Although, it is nice to be on the flight with just Kelci and Cece. Soon to be one happy family.

“She had a package being delivered tonight. She didn’t want to miss that. Plus, it’s nice just to be the three of us.”

“You think so?” I raise an eyebrow.

She smiles softly. “It gives us time to go over notes we might have. You know we will be spending two weeks in Barbados with a married couple that thinks we’re happily engaged. That’s a far cry from dinner.”

“Oh right. Makes sense. Let’s see...what are some things that we should discuss? Favorite color? Favorite Movie? Favorite meal?”

“Purple. Love Actually. Steak and potatoes.”

I smirk. “Maybe I should get a notebook out and jot that down.” I shift in my seat and turn my body toward her. “Although, I think it makes more sense if we just have normal conversations with one another. You learn and discover a lot from someone by just talking.”

“That’s a valid point,” Kelci replies, looking back to Cece, who hasn’t moved.

“Tell me about Cece’s father. Where he is? The story?”

“I don’t think we need to talk about him,” she replies, standing up from her chair. The look of discomfort immediately clouds over her face.

“I didn’t mean to pry. Just trying to make conversation.”

She slowly sits back down, her hands quietly wringing in her lap.
