Once again, we all enjoyed the water all day.

The only time we weren’t playing in the water was to get out and eat. We were all very much sunburned and loving it.

As the sun began to set low in the sky, we headed back up to our camp. Everyone took turns changing in the tent, and Marty began to cook some dinner. In case you’re wondering why Marty is the one to cook dinner all the time, this man is a grill master, none of the rest of us can compare to the meals this man can create on a grill.

We finished our dinner and cleaned up. Everyone sat around the campfire talking. No one had mentioned fishing tonight, which was highly unusual. That was something we did every night when we camped. So for no one to bring up fishing was the strangest thing in the world to me. I just went with the flow and didn’t mention it either. As we sat and talked, it occurred to me to ask Marty how far we were from our research area. His answer was two miles, one as the crow flies. With my question, everyone grew silent. I think that is what we had all been thinking all along, but no one would voice it.

We spent the rest of the night sitting by the fire. We heard a few limb breaks, but that could be normal animals.

It was late by the time we all climbed into our tent. I woke up again just before dawn to see Chris’s side of the tent sagging again. Chris was snoring away, oblivious to the almost fallen tent. This time, I couldn’t fall back asleep.

As the sun begins to rise, I crawled over to the door of the tent and slowly unzipped it so as not to wake the others. I walked straight around to Chris’s side of the tent. The middle pole was gone again. But this time, I couldn’t find it.

It wasn’t long before the rest of the family got up. We had a thorough search for the tent pole before breakfast. It was nowhere to be found. We decided to pack up after breakfast and head back home.

As we packed our gear, we were also missing two solar lights. To this day, we don’t know what happened on that camping trip. But I was more than ready to get home.
