We flew over the Viridianwood, covering as much distance as possible in the air. With the limited information Iâd been given from Tiger Lily and a few trusted Fae sources, we had decided that the general location of the bone faerieâs home should be at the heart of the forest. It was one of the only locations in Neverland where I had not yet ventured.
We landed, silently on the moss covered ground with massive trees towering over our heads. The canopy above was so thick, that the landscape below appeared to be in perpetual twilight. We fanned out to cover more ground, but kept in sight of each other. It would be a mistake to split up here. We moved through the thick underbrush slowly, each of us with a weapon poised in hand. Scanning the surroundings for potential threats. The handle of my dagger dug into my palm as I gripped it tighter than I needed to.
This forest was alive, and it felt as though it was watching our every move. A symphony of sounds filled the air around us, leaves crunching underfoot, unknown creatures scurried at the arrival of intruders in their midst. The delicate swish of the branches as they brushed past our bodies, grabbing at our clothes, like skeletal hands. Strange, blue orbs were fading in and out of view. Something unseen, rustled in the dead leaves at my feet. I paused silently, the sound disappearing as quickly as it came. A pair of glowing, orange eyes, stared out at me from a hollowed out tree.
âThis place gives me the fuckinâ creeps,â Ryder complained. âIâll take pirates any day over this shit.â
âYou owe us big time after this, Pan. It was one thing going along with your ridiculous plan for this Wendy girl and now youâve roped us into this shit. If I die, Iâm taking you with me,â Eben said. It was always fucking sunshine and roses with him.
I rolled my eyes. Iâd just come to terms with the fact that we were going to be at odds until I brought the girl back home after May Day.
âJust shut up and keep your eyes open. I donât want to be here when it gets dark. We need to get this done today.â
I heard a familiar whistle and turned in the direction of the call. I could see Tripp between the trees ahead of us. He was crouched on the ground, examining something. I came through the brush to find a circular patch of land that was devoid of any life. The ground was black and littered with bones. Drab scraps of thread-bear clothing still clinging to some of them. Swords, their metal still polished and shining, lay useless beside the piles of remains.
âLooks like a band of pirates met their maker here,â Tripp explained as he held up a rumpled tricorn hat. âIâm wondering if this is the work of your bone faerie. Some of the bones are missing. Iâm counting eleven bodies, I think, but I canât be sure since the skeletons arenât in tact.
