A few days later, Ethan and Jacob found themselves summoned to the crowded assembly hall. Pisk stood in front of them, holding a stack of papers. That meant only one thing—there would be another transport the next day—Jacob dreaded the days when Pisk walked in with a transport list. Pisk would have one for every barracks. Each OD was responsible for keeping the peace within the barracks, and Jacob had been assigned to one of the older barracks, in which he knew most people. He’d been glad to have few of his charges transported, as most people there worked in the camp administration and hospital, which exempted them from the transports. Recently, however, he’d been the bearer of bad news more often. Ethan was in charge of one of the newer barracks. Apart from the occasional fight, he didn’t have to intervene too much. The men, women, and children in his barracks lasted hardly longer than a week before making the journey east. Although the job was tough on Ethan—he often had long lists—he managed quite well by keeping his distance. Jacob wasn’t sure he could do the same job.

“I bet he enjoys this part of his day most of all,” Ethan said as they followed the small queue toward the Austrian. There were many people in the line, and Jacob and Ethan were in no rush to get to the front.

Jacob nodded. “He loves the power.”

They got to the front of the queue and took their lists from Pisk, who hardly acknowledged them. They didn’t have to look closely to see Ethan had the tougher task, as always. His list spanned two full pages of numbers and names. “There’s no one on here that I know. These are just names to me.”

“Unfortunately, I know quite a few people on my list.” Jacob pointed out some names, and Ethan nodded.

They walked out of the hall and went in different directions without another word. They’d see each other soon enough, but they preferred to deliver the bad news as quickly as possible. People would need to prepare for their journey the next day. Jacob hated it when families were torn apart, and Westerbork was flooded with tears.
