I should’ve seen it coming, what happened. I should’ve read the signs.

One look at Gideon when he showed up for work that morning, and I should’ve told him to go straight home and get some sleep. I should’ve told him to tell the boss he was sick. I would’ve covered for him. Gideon’s a good egg. All the guys on the crew like him.

But I didn’t tell him to go home. I figured he’d stayed up late for the Fourth, doing a bit too much celebrating, same as me, and hadn’t got himself enough sleep. Cup or two of coffee—the black stuff Charlene makes that’s more fit to tar roads than to drink—and he’d wake up and be right as rain. That’s what I figured.

It was a serious error in judgment on my part. No, that’s being kind to myself. It was more than that. It was wrong what I did. Or rather, what I didn’t do. I chose to ignore the signs, the truth, and choosing the way I did could’ve cost somebody their life. Could’ve cost Gideon his life.

Bad enough as it was, what happened.
