It's surreal to be back at the same castle we left not that long ago, especially knowing that it's one of our only chances at having somewhere to hide. I suppose we could have gone to a village or one of the towns within the kingdom, but I feel like that would raise more eyebrows than staying in the castle of a noble.
"Wait here, I'll go ahead and talk to Peter," Finette says, gesturing for us to stay out of sight.
None of us argues, and we let her ride off towards the stables.
"Do you think this is going to work?" Garon asks.
I shrug. "You know Peter better than we do."
"He was always Finette's friend," he responds. "I only knew him in passing."
Interesting, though it makes it harder to judge how this is going to go.
"Once we're settled, I'm going to need to get word to my father," I say. "Though I'm not sure of the best way to do that."
"I can take a message to the generals around the palace," Philip says.
I shake my head. "It's too dangerous. Everyone knows who you are."
"Then I can do it," Garon responds. "So long as the letter has your seal, I'm sure they will deliver it."
Sophia looks like she wants to tell him not to, but decides against it.
"Thank you, Garon." I hate the idea of putting him in danger, but I know I need to get a message to Father, especially if I want to assure myself that he is safe.
And he'll need to know the same about me.
Grief and pain simmer just below the surface, but now the shock of finding Mother that way has worn off a little, I'm starting to realise the truth in what my friends are saying. I have to pull it together and I can't let myself get overtaken by my own emotions, not when my entire kingdom is depending on me.
I may have the urge to run away into the pit of my own despair, but I'm not going to.
The clatter of hooves on the road draws our attention towards it. Finette approaches with a man astride a second horse beside her. Interesting. I had assumed that Lord Dewby would greet us at the castle and not here.
They draw their horses to a stop.
"Your Highness," Lord Dewby says, dipping his head to me. "Finette has filled me in on what you require of us, and it would be my honour to host you in our castle."
"Thank you, Lord Dewby. We are in your debt."
"It is nothing but my duty, Your Highness. My family is, and will forever be, allies to the crown of Alventia," he responds. "But may I make a suggestion?"
"Of course."
"I intend to introduce you as my guests, but perhaps that may invite scrutiny you do not require," he says.
"You might be right. We didn't have much time to consider our course of action," I admit. And I'm not sure how much I had to do with it anyway. The others mostly made the plans around me while I was incapable.
