Sitting and staring at the cell wall, Ryan knew that God was all he had left. An arson conviction could keep him locked up for several years. And the excuse that he had burned down the office building unintentionally, while drunk, was not likely to elicit any sympathy from the judge.

In that moment, Ryan’s will broke, and he handed his life over to God.

His sentence turned out to be more lenient than expected—six months in treatment for alcohol addiction, then twelve months of jail time.

As the months passed, Ryan began to gain hope that he could do something important for God. During his first few weeks in jail, he spent much of his time studying his Bible. After a month he started a prayer meeting and then a Bible study for his cellblock.

One day Ryan began praying that God would expand his territory. That same day he alone, from among the 160 men on his cellblock, was invited to join a local pastor and some prison officers for a special Bible study. For three hours the pastor taught Ryan and the others the skills they needed to mine truth from God’s Word. Ryan’s view of Scripture was transformed.

With renewed enthusiasm, he returned to his cell and began to use his new training to teach scriptural truth to his fellow inmates while showing them how to study the Bible for themselves. His ministry thrived as he led many other men into new and deeper relationships with God.2
