“DADDY?”

“Hm?” Wes ducked into the refrigerator. Mayonnaise. Where was it? He scanned the shelves in the door then sent his attention over the others. Ah, there.

“Is Mom really okay?”

“She just overdid it today is all. She’ll be sore for a day or two, I’m sure, but after that she’ll be good as new.” He smiled to assure Missy as they put together turkey sandwiches with all the vegetables he could find.

“Is she ever going back to church?” Parallel lines of worry appeared between her eyebrows.

“I don’t know, sweetheart. I hope so.”

“I asked my Sunday school class to pray for her this morning.” That seemed to trouble her for some reason.

“I’m sure your mom appreciates all those prayers.” The troubled look didn’t relent. “What’s wrong, Missy? You look like you’ve got something unpleasant on your mind.”

“Well....” Her gaze fell away.

He waited.

“Mrs. Armbruster told me Mom needs to stop being so selfish.” Missy’s eyes filled with tears. “She said Mom is wallowing in sin, and that’s why she’s been so unhappy the last couple of years and not attending church.”

His daughter didn’t need his immediate response—absolute fury. So Wes counted to ten as he’d heard Terry tell Dax to do often enough over the years. His son didn’t seem to heed the advice, but at the moment, Wes needed to. What kind of person would say something so hateful, much less to a child? Actually, he knew the answer. He knew Mrs. Armbruster. Far too well. The most self-righteous, holier-than-thou person he’d ever known, she thought she knew everything about everybody when she truly didn’t know squat.

He forced his anger down and faced his hurting child.

“Sweetheart, you can’t listen to what that woman says. She has no idea what’s going on with your mom, so she’s in no position to pass judgment. Do you know how much contact she’s had with your mom in the last two years?”

Missy slowly shook her head, her eyes still watery.

“None. Mrs. Armbruster hasn’t called or come to see your mom in the last two years. Not once.” Which wasn’t a problem as far as he was concern. He’d prefer the vile woman stay as far from his wife as humanly possible. He put his hands on Missy’s shoulders and looked into her eyes. “How well can we know someone we never take the time to talk to?”

“We can’t.”

“Exactly.” Wes pulled her into a hug. “Don’t you worry about anything she says, okay?”

She nodded against his chest.

“Now, are you hungry?” He set her away and grinned.

“Starved.” Her answering smile lifted his heart.

Meanwhile, fury burned deep. “Let’s take lunch to your mom.”

They found Terry asleep in the recliner, feet propped up on the footrest.

Goofball was sacked out beside the chair. He briefly opened his eyes upon their approach. His tail gave a couple of half-hearted thumps on the floor. Then he closed his eyes again, as exhausted as his mistress.

Missy shot Wes a worried look, but he only smiled. “Let her sleep for a bit, then we’ll wake her to eat.
