After nearly jumping out of my skin, I managed to compose myself enough to ask, “Tambi, what in the world are you talking about?”

She resituated her head as it teetered, aligning it with her shoulders. “I don’t know. I know I keep singing that same old song, but a vision of me naked just popped into my head.”

Interesting, in light of what we’d seen in my projection. What was with all the nekidity? And could it relate to Tambi’s murder?

“And you thought you’d randomly share that with me, because…?”

Her perplexed round eyes found mine. “I don’t know why it felt important, it just did. So important, I had to break one of your silly rules and pop in unannounced.”

All this meant something. I knew it did. The bit about seeing herself naked, my projection last night. But what?

“Did you happen to see where you were when you saw yourself in your birthday suit?’

“No. It happened so fast. It was just a blip.”

“Are you sure you weren’t seeing anyone before you died, Tambi? Like, maybe someone who was married that you didn’t want anyone to know about?”

Maybe that could explain what I saw last night. Maybe, as Fab suggested, Tambi was having an illicit affair and they role played? It could explain the obnoxiously red wig, right?

She used her hands to make her head move in the negative. “First, no. I would never date a married man. If I never remember anything else, I’d remember that. Never. I’m a woman first, thank you very much. Second, I’m sure, Evanora. I might not remember much, but I remember that. I wasn’t dating and hadn’t in a couple of years.”

With a shiver, I said, “First, I beg of you, stop making your head do that. It’s…unsettling. Second, when this popped into your head, were you naked with anyone?”

She raised her hands to either side of her head, only to let them fall to her side, folding them in her lap with a guilty look. “No. I was alone.”

I started my truck and pulled out of my parking space, driving toward the houses we were renovating. “Okay, so aside from seeing yourself in your birthday suit, have you remembered anything else since last night?”

“Nope. Not a thing. And I spent a lot of time trying to remember while I gorged on potato skins and cheese fries. Do you know how long it’s been since I had carbs like that?”

I frowned. “The afterlife has potato skins and cheese fries?” I should have known. My father was always bragging about the buffet up there.

She squished her index finger and thumb together. “And those little mini-cheeseburgers, too—with bacon. The awesome thing about it, at least according to a nice lady named Mrs. Fedderbaum, is that I won’t gain any weight—ever. As a fat kid for most of my life, that’s at least some consolation for being dead, right?”

But did they have coffee? That was the more pertinent question in my mind.

Gripping the steering wheel, I understood her need to make lemonade.
