The 1973 award to Kissinger was surely motivated by something other than the conclusion of the Vietnam War. Norway borders Russia in the northern part of the country, and although it had chosen to side with the United States in the Cold War, the Russian superpower was posing a constant threat because of the geographic vicinity. The Norwegian governmentâvia the Norwegian Nobel Committeeâmay have felt a need to, once again, prove its loyalty by selecting Kissinger. When selecting Le Duc Tho, however, the Committee was doing its jobâhonoring both sides in the attempted peace accords.
Politically strategic choices do not justify the actions of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. On the contrary, they contribute to mistrust in the institution and to leadership in general. Rather than making the world a more peaceful place, the 1973 award has encouraged state leaders to keep a dysfunctional and violent mindset to gain personal power. Little did Nobel know what would become of his last will after he trusted the Norwegian Parliament with his prize, but his words in Nemesis are as true today as they were then.
