“Do you have her?”

I pulled the phone away from my ear as if that could lessen the intensity of the vampire’s question. “Yes.”

“Put her on,” he snapped, his Spanish accent growing heavier.

“She’s not awake yet.” I chose my next words carefully. “We sedated her so our healer could examine her without further trauma.”

“Further trauma?” he said in a low growl.

Grimacing, I banged my free hand against my forehead. “We simply want to make her as comfortable as possible. As soon as she’s been checked out and is awake, I’ll tell her you wish to speak to her.”

Sabrina should decide if she’d break the news to Vincenzo or if she wanted us to—and when.

“You have one hour.” He hung up.

Sixty whole minutes before the vamp went batshit to find her. How long before the Lonestars found Sabrina and arrested us all under Ryann’s edict for assisting the rogue?

I took an extra deep breath, my head throbbing like a son of a bitch, my body in knots, and all the fine work of my chiropractor undone.

Boo, Laurent’s gray cat, rubbed against my ankle, and I picked her up, nuzzling her fur against my cheek. My racing heart slowed to match her comforting purrs, and I closed the side door behind me without slamming it.

The warm lighting turned the checkerboard parquet floor of the former lobby into a gleaming expanse, inviting people to curl up in the cushy furniture. One day I’d have the time to pluck a title from the neat stacks crowding the length of bookshelves and get comfy in front of the large fireplace, while the 1940s-style radio crooned jazz. Laurent would lay his head in my lap, my fingers idly scratching through his curls, both of us absorbed in our books in perfect contentment together.

“Mitzi?” He poked his head around the curved staircase leading to the boarded-off second floor, carrying an armful of clean sheets.

I patted Boo on the head and deposited her on the floor. “Is Sabrina secured?”

He nodded, holding up the linens. “She won’t have to sleep on the floor either.” At least vamps weren’t affected by iron like their demon sires.

“I’ll help.” I strode past the upright piano and vintage alcohol ads on the wall with nary a floorboard squeaking. Laurent had carefully crafted many details of this space yet denied himself in other ways that were painful to behold, like the single table and chair in the gorgeous kitchen.

I followed him to the large elevator, which was situated to the right of the staircase. Its iron gate and old-fashioned copper doors carved with diamonds and swirls were partially ajar and we slipped inside.

Sabrina was propped up, her head slumped forward and one of her hands cuffed and attached with a heavy chain to the iron-lined wall.

Emmett knelt beside her, washing her face off with a small cloth. “I found it in your bathroom and figured…” He shrugged.

Laurent arranged the bedlinens on the ground. “Good call.”

I’d been through a lot with them since I reclaimed my
