CHAPTER X

Salieri and his two sons; I abuse Mocenigo—Giuseppe and I become friends—Giacomo trumps all and gets himself arrested!—Goodbye to fat Pietro—We plan my brother’s escape with the help of Lorenzo—Thwarted twice, by circumstance and bad weather—We finally send him out of harm’s way

It had been a wonderful adventure, and even if I did not believe the story of the Doge in all its detail—soldiers are always prone to vainglorious rodomontade—it delighted my senses no end. For a few days only, I found Venice not such a dreary place after all: there was fun to be had, if one searched in the right places, even though such fun could get one killed. Just a day after Simonetti’s, a boy was driven out of his house by his family and almost torn to pieces by the prying mob, only because he had received a love letter from another boy. Just a letter! And this is Venice! I put it all down to the increasingly powerful office of the State Inquisitor, full of zealous, self-righteous men who held more power than the Doge and made life so difficult for everyone not outwardly pious or rich enough to buy freedom from persecution. In any event, the interlude with the bawdy Giuseppe really was the only exciting thing to happen to me during that time. Afterwards, I went back to eating, drinking, playing faro, and…generally, being very bored.
