Sure enough, after the fear departed, anger arrived. Patricia wasn’t just mad, she was angrier than a wet hornet on a hot summer day.

“I did some research,” she told Brian, sitting in the passenger seat of her motorhome as Brian navigated down I-75 South toward Atlanta. Brian glanced over at Patricia. She had her beautiful eyes locked on the screen of a laptop that was sitting in her lap. Patricia looked intent and determined and no longer appeared shaken and frightened.

“What did you come up with?” Brian asked without telling Patricia how beautiful she looked in her white sweater and long blue dress. Patricia had an appointment to see Cathy Nettleson and needed to resemble the talented travel writer that she was. Edna had gone through a lot of trouble setting up the meeting and Patricia, Brian knew, wasn’t going to let a slippery snake slip through her fingers.

“Well, the poison is rare, but not extremely rare,” Patricia explained, ignoring the heavy morning traffic Brian was fighting through. “The poison starts out with a basic metal that can be turned into a powder form. Alone, the poison can cause harmful health effects, mainly to the lungs, but not death. However, when added with a certain chemical that I can’t pronounce because the name is so long and aggravating…” Patricia rolled her eyes. “The poison when added to the chemical turns extremely toxic and can cause immediate suffocation and swelling of the throat.”

“So it’s a two-to-tango is what you’re saying?”

Patricia nodded. “The poison can be found in any of your basic metals, but the chemical that’s needed to make the poison toxic can only be obtained through businesses that are given the green light by the government—like this business I’m looking at right now.” Patricia tapped the screen of the laptop. “I’m looking at a business called Brownwing Technologies. The company is based right in Atlanta.”

“What kind of company is it?”

“A research company that works for Lastor-Murks Pharmaceuticals. The company website states that the core mission of Brownwing Technologies is to develop pills with miniature computer chips in them.”

“Computer chips?”

“Aimed at people with depression,” Patricia confirmed. “The pill releases the computer chip, which starts sending signals to the brain…bypassing the need to have your brain hacked open and the chip inserted manually. In theory, the signals the chip sends to the brain once activated are supposed to alter the chemical imbalances, thus altering how a person thinks.”

“Sounds…warped.”

“Well, in theory, the computer chip is designed to teach a person to think positive by sending signals that block negative thought processes,” Patricia explained, reading the company’s website. She paused and looked up at Brian. “The chemical that’s needed to turn the poison that killed Zach Benton toxic is added to each computer chip…sort of like a protective barrier.”

“Who owns the company?” Brian asked.

“Some guy named Mark Tinnerman. And get this,” Patricia stated in an angry voice: “Cathy Nettleson was once married to Mark Tinnerman.”

“Looks like we have a prime suspect.”

“Well, I would normally
