Chapter eighteen
Sienna
By the time I fell through my front door, I was ready to collapse. I was clutching my half-eaten kebab like it was gold, because in my mind it was. Iâd had back-to-back classes today and an afternoon of practical tests, and I was ready to pass out.
After shrugging off my jacket and kicking it out of the way, I reluctantly set my kebab down and dashed to the bathroom. When Iâd left, Iâd been fine. With every kilometre closer to home I got, the closer my bladder was to exploding. Quickly, I took care of business, washed my hands, and ran my fingers through my hair. My very messy hair. The same hair that needed a cut. Iâd have to add that to the to-do list. Or maybe Iâd give up and just let it go. I wondered if I could rock the mum bun.
A knock at the door startled me. Briefly I considered flicking off the light and freezing where I was. Maybe if I stayed really quiet whoever it was would go away and I could crawl into bed.
âSienna?â a woman called out before knocking again.
Feeling guilty, I hurried back out, having to walk past the very tempting kebab lying abandoned on the bench. Pulling open the door, I found Josie standing there looking awkward.
âHi.â
âHey, Sienna. I was wondering if I could talk to you for a minute?â Josie was nervous. I glanced behind her, but she quickly eased my mind. âDonât worry, heâs not here. Itâs just me.â
âOh.â I donât know if I was relieved or disappointed. Maybe a bit of both. âCome in.â
âThanks.â
âCan I get you anything?â I offered, trying to remember my manners.
âNo thanks, Iâm fine. I just got back from dinner with Nateâs parents.â
âBet that was fun,â I snarked before realising what Iâd done and clamping my hand over my mouth. âIâm sorryâ¦I didnât meanâ¦â
Josie quickly waved off my apology. âDonât even worry about it. Hunter told me what Kaley said and honestly, I donât blame you. Is that your dinner?â she asked, pointing at the cooling kebab.
âAh, yeah.â
âEat! Please.â
âYou sure?â
âAbsolutely.â
Grabbing the greasy wrapper, I took a huge unladylike bite before moaning like a hussy in heat.
âI know that sound.â Josie smiled as she shrugged off her jacket and took a seat on the couch. After grabbing a tea towel, I followed her over. âSo, youâre probably wondering what Iâm doing here.â
âWell, yeah kinda.â
âI know. Completely random but Hunter told us what happened last night.â
âAh shit.â
âHe was pretty worked up about it.â
âIâ¦â
âHey, no judgement here. Iâd be willing to guess you werenât exactly doing cartwheels in the corridor either. And I donât blame you. Iâve been exactly where you are.â
âYou have?â That surprised me. Nate and Josie looked like they had the perfect little family.
âAbsolutely. Did you know Matilda isnât Nateâs biological daughter?â
âSheâs not?â
âNo.â
âBut theyâre so close. She calls him Dad. Iâm sure I heard her call Hunter, Uncle.â My mind was whirling.
âThatâs because she does. Nate is her dad. Heâs not her sperm donor, but heâs her dad.
