Chapter eighteen

Sienna

By the time I fell through my front door, I was ready to collapse. I was clutching my half-eaten kebab like it was gold, because in my mind it was. I’d had back-to-back classes today and an afternoon of practical tests, and I was ready to pass out.

After shrugging off my jacket and kicking it out of the way, I reluctantly set my kebab down and dashed to the bathroom. When I’d left, I’d been fine. With every kilometre closer to home I got, the closer my bladder was to exploding. Quickly, I took care of business, washed my hands, and ran my fingers through my hair. My very messy hair. The same hair that needed a cut. I’d have to add that to the to-do list. Or maybe I’d give up and just let it go. I wondered if I could rock the mum bun.

A knock at the door startled me. Briefly I considered flicking off the light and freezing where I was. Maybe if I stayed really quiet whoever it was would go away and I could crawl into bed.

“Sienna?” a woman called out before knocking again.

Feeling guilty, I hurried back out, having to walk past the very tempting kebab lying abandoned on the bench. Pulling open the door, I found Josie standing there looking awkward.

“Hi.”

“Hey, Sienna. I was wondering if I could talk to you for a minute?” Josie was nervous. I glanced behind her, but she quickly eased my mind. “Don’t worry, he’s not here. It’s just me.”

“Oh.” I don’t know if I was relieved or disappointed. Maybe a bit of both. “Come in.”

“Thanks.”

“Can I get you anything?” I offered, trying to remember my manners.

“No thanks, I’m fine. I just got back from dinner with Nate’s parents.”

“Bet that was fun,” I snarked before realising what I’d done and clamping my hand over my mouth. “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean…”

Josie quickly waved off my apology. “Don’t even worry about it. Hunter told me what Kaley said and honestly, I don’t blame you. Is that your dinner?” she asked, pointing at the cooling kebab.

“Ah, yeah.”

“Eat! Please.”

“You sure?”

“Absolutely.”

Grabbing the greasy wrapper, I took a huge unladylike bite before moaning like a hussy in heat.

“I know that sound.” Josie smiled as she shrugged off her jacket and took a seat on the couch. After grabbing a tea towel, I followed her over. “So, you’re probably wondering what I’m doing here.”

“Well, yeah kinda.”

“I know. Completely random but Hunter told us what happened last night.”

“Ah shit.”

“He was pretty worked up about it.”

“I…”

“Hey, no judgement here. I’d be willing to guess you weren’t exactly doing cartwheels in the corridor either. And I don’t blame you. I’ve been exactly where you are.”

“You have?” That surprised me. Nate and Josie looked like they had the perfect little family.

“Absolutely. Did you know Matilda isn’t Nate’s biological daughter?”

“She’s not?”

“No.”

“But they’re so close. She calls him Dad. I’m sure I heard her call Hunter, Uncle.” My mind was whirling.

“That’s because she does. Nate is her dad. He’s not her sperm donor, but he’s her dad.
