Chapter Fifteen

Well, at least I had a good idea of where the ghostbusters were getting their information. Now I had to determine who at the Cruz PD was giving it to them. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Samms start to rise from his seat. I set the phone down, quickly grabbed my bottle of Heineken and headed back to the table. Samms glared at me as I lowered myself into my chair.

“Just what was that all about?” he asked.

I raised the almost empty bottle. “What? I told you I was thirsty.” I took a quick sip and set the bottle down. “Sorry I forgot to order you another one.”

He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest. “Don’t play dumb with me, Red. I was watching you very closely. I saw you move over next to that guy and grab his phone the minute he sprinted out the door. So, you’d better spill it.”

“Fine. That was Grant Goodeve, the head ghostbuster on Paranormal Phenomenon. I overheard a little of his phone conversation, enough to know that he just missed getting a video of Manny’s body.”

Samms’s face darkened. “What!”

“Ssh.” I leaned in a bit closer. “He was talking to someone and telling them that he’d just missed you claiming the body. He asked whoever it was if they’d told anyone else, and then he said that Fishbein was less than cooperative, and said if he wanted a video he’d have to contact the guy’s spirit.”

Samms’s eyes widened. “Harvey said that? He’s got more of a sense of humor than I gave him credit for.”

“Yeah, well, that’s not the best part. When he jumped up to move his car I decided to see what the last number he’d dialed was, and I got the desk at the Cruz PD. I can’t think of any reason why he’d be calling the police, or vice versa—unless, of course, he wanted to talk to Anderson about getting into Waincroft Manor.”

Samms drummed his fingers on the tabletop, his eyes slitted as he thought. “I worked with those guys, although quite a few have left since then. None of the men under me would ever do something like that.”

“I agree. But Dale’s been hiring a lot of new people lately.”

He nodded. “Some of ’em retired, and some of ’em left because, quite honestly, they didn’t like working for a woman.”

I was tempted to ask, “A woman? Or Dale in particular?” but figured I should leave well enough alone. “Maybe one of her new recruits isn’t as trustworthy as she thinks.”

He rubbed his hand down his empty Heineken bottle. “It wouldn’t be the first time something like this has happened. Cops starting out don’t make a great salary, and if they’ve got a family to support and someone comes along and offers ’em a lot of money—heck, it happens. Tomorrow I’ll go over there, get the lowdown on all the new hires, see if I can pinpoint who the ghostbuster’s mole might be.
