Be it for financial gain, a grab at some refracted limelight or simply ‘bragging rights’, Britney – the once-celebrated virgin – was a highly desirable sexual conquest. Even a hint of a possible liaison, real or fictitious, was enough to send tabloid tongues into rabid overdrive. In his book, The Unknown Keyboard Player, Dan Kenney, formerly part of Britney’s backing band, discusses this fascination with ‘bedding’ Britney. ‘I was twenty-five years old when I landed the gig playing keyboards for Britney Spears,’ writes Kenney, admitting that the question he still gets asked ‘most frequently’ is: ‘Did you bang her?’ Kenney goes on to note, ‘It’s only a male question. No woman ever, not even once, has asked me this. Only guys.’246

While any possible Britney hook-up was evaluated in minute detail, her former paramour Justin Timberlake worked his way through a long roster of flings and relationships – ranging from Spears’ former party pal Lindsay Lohan to songstress Rihanna and actress Cameron Diaz – relatively unscathed. He faced no grilling about the intimate details of his liaisons nor did his partners ever run to the press for a cash windfall. In contrast, just claiming to have been with Britney – the biggest celebrity in the world – guaranteed a pay day of one kind or another.
