That night, neither David nor James-William slept. They had power over the minds of anyone they chose, but the stakes were so high here, there could be no allowance for error. Mere mind control would not suffice. They could not take the chance that their hold over either politician could wane for a minute, so they could not control them at all.

Instead, that night both potential candidates had vivid and unforgettable dreams.

The Secretary dreamed that she had a very successful campaign, but the relentless harassment of a monstrous Republican nominee and his followers put her just a tiny bit behind. A few thousand votes in a few states and the interference of a hostile foreign power, combined with the insanity that is the Electoral College, cost her the race. And the monster won. This dream was the only reality she could see if she ran. She knew this would happen. One name gave her hope in her dream: Nathan Brimmer.

Likewise, the Senator from Vermont had a nightmare in which he remained in the primary season long after he should have quit. He had no hope for the nomination, yet he stayed in relentlessly attacking the inevitable nominee, dividing a party when unity was needed, refusing to endorse her before the convention. His vanity split a party that had to remain united. And then came the monster. Again, the reality of this nightmare was all he could see if he ran. He knew this would happen. He too was given a name in which there would be hope: Nathan Brimmer.

The following day, the Former Secretary of State announced she would not seek the Democratic nomination for President. The nation was stunned. How could she not run? Everyone knew she would. She said that after a long talk with her husband and daughter, she thought it best not to enter the race. She would continue to work for the good of the country through philanthropic and humanitarian means.

The day after that, the Senator from Vermont, too, had a press conference where he likewise announced he would not seek the nomination. He would continue to work for the common good in his role in the Senate.

For good measure the twins sent a similar, but less intense, dream to the Vice President. He too realized that if he ran, it would not end well and was given the name of Nathan Brimmer as one he could trust. The Vice President had not made any public speculation about running for President; however, it was a safe guess that he would now consider it.

Nathan never made a major decision without talking to Sarah. He wasn’t quite sure how to start the conversation. “Sarah?” he started.

“Oh, Nathan. Now that there isn’t a presumed front-runner for President, are you going to run?”

“What? How did you know?”

“I may not be able to do everything you and the boys can, but I know you. And I know David and James-William.”

“Are you good with this?”

“Oh, Nathan, I’ve known you were destined for this kind of thing since we were dating in college.
