After the gigs she’d worked in her time, Eva knew that gangs and prostitution went hand in hand. Recalling the male clientele on the sundeck of The Marbella Club, Eva would have bet some of those sunburnt chests had been pressed against prostitutes recently. The big question was whether the prostitution happened at The Marbella Club. Jess had been gone so long now that the prospect of her being forced into sex work was a better result than the alternatives. At least that would have meant she was still alive. There was something in the covert argument she’d heard in the basement at Marbella that caught her interest. It gave them two new avenues. The first was this arrangement with the other gang working over at Furdons Way. That shed some light on the joint work they’d seen on the raid at the other industrial estate. They’d already come face to face with the partnership, only then they didn’t know what it was. Now they knew something about it. Maybe there was enough space at Furdons for the partnership to keep people against their will. But, for what purpose? There was a kind of logic behind taking Simon off the street. They wanted to disguise their crimes. By using his mask they’d pulled off some pretty weak crimes. So what was it about? Misdirection was still the best she could think of. If that was the case it had to be something big. And as the misdirection was happening in the east side of town, it made sense that the real action was taking place in the west – such as Leigh… or Furdons Way – with the partnership operation. Furdons Way was full of possibility. Naturally Dan couldn’t wait for Eva to finish looking into The Marbella Club sex worker idea – he had to go off and scout Furdons Way by himself. Eva didn’t moan of course. With Dan resistance was futile. And by now, they needed to move faster than ever. Jess’s predicament wasn’t a pleasant thought. Eva was even less optimistic about Simon’s chances. He was a terror to criminals of all creeds. People like Galvan would want him put down like a dog. And having been missing for a week already, there was every chance Simon had already been executed.

Eva started her research with the working girls she knew. Driving around the back streets near the community college was about as far as anyone could get from The Marbella Club, yet if her theory was right, there would be a connection. It was six o’clock, and thankfully a good section of the working girls were out early. Eva drove around in her bright red Alfa, looking nothing like a standard kerb crawling sleaze. The women walking the streets nudged each other when she drove past. A couple of them made a joke and flashed some ankle. Eva allowed herself a smile, but she was still focussed on her quarry. After half an hour of risking being stopped by the police, she was angry and despondent.
