CHAPTER FIVE

‘NO!’

‘Be quiet,’ Carrick ordered softly and continued to taste her mouth. Kenda could feel the tension growing in him, and in herself, could feel his arousal—an arousal that was goading her, exciting her.

‘You believed all that was said,’ she argued desperately, knowing—knowing—that she wanted this above all else.

‘What chance did I have of doing otherwise?’ he asked absently as he moved his mouth to her cheekbone, her temple, his actions compulsive, restless. ‘I didn’t know you.’

‘And now?’

He grunted, hugged her to him, his maleness a spur she was desperately trying to deny. ‘I’m attracted to you.’

‘So you said,’ she agreed pithily, and he laughed.

‘Probably about as much as you’re attracted to me,’ he continued, his voice soft, persuasive, throaty.

‘No.’

‘Yes. So what are we going to do about it?’

‘By all means let’s hold a discussion on it!’

‘You want me to give you no choice?’

‘No,’ she retorted as the alarming possibilities flew through her head.

His movements rough, intense, he pushed his hands into her thick, curly hair, held it away from her exquisite face, stared deep into her stormy eyes. ‘This isn’t doing either of us any good,’ he murmured mockingly.

‘So what do you want to do?’ she derided him sarcastically. ‘Have an affair? Get it out of your system?’

‘Yes,’ he agreed simply as his mouth began an exploration of her jaw, and her stomach dropped.

‘What?’

‘Why not?’

‘Why not? You really expect I will accommodate you after your insults?’

‘Yes,’ he said softly, ‘because wanting me is eating away at your soul. You’ll end up waspish.’

‘I’m always waspish.’

‘Because of me?’

‘No. And don’t keep kissing me! It’s undermining!’

‘It was meant to be.’

‘Stop being absurd. We haven’t known each other a week yet.’

‘I know. Disgraceful, isn’t it?’

‘Carrick—’

‘I saw you before...’

‘That doesn’t count.’

‘Who’s counting?’ he murmured as he continued to blaze a fiery trail down her cheek.

Shoving him back a fraction, Kenda demanded, ‘And is that why you let me come? Because you’d once seen me and...’

‘Fancied you?’ he mocked. ‘Of course. I always did like a challenge. And is that your ruling? To know a man a week before you—’

‘You dare!’ she interrupted stormily. ‘You just dare! And stop laughing! You’ve been foul to me since I’ve been here.’

‘Yes. After seeing what you did to Richard’s things, I was having second thoughts.’

‘Then why have you changed your mind?’

Raising his head, he said simply, quietly, believingly, flatly, ‘Because, dear lady, you are driving me insane. Stop talking, and, for the love of God, please, kiss me back. With passion.’

Eyes wide, she stared at him, stared at his mouth, wriggled uncomfortably because the need inside was growing so very hard to bear, closed her eyes, and exclaimed defeatedly, ‘This is ridiculous! And you’re aroused.’

He shook with laughter. ‘So are you.’

‘Hardly polite of you to point it out,’ she grumbled, feeling stupid.

‘You did.’

‘You’ll hurt me.’

‘I’ll try not to,’ he soothed meekly.

‘This is silly.’

‘Yes.’

‘We don’t know each other.’

‘No.’

‘I don’t want an affair with you.’

‘Then don’t have one.’

‘Oh...’ Shoving him away, she walked agitatedly across to the sofa, stood with her hands digging into its back.
