The colours in a winter palette are those that can impart colour without any real richness. Useful paints include terre verte and Payne’s grey, which are both very ‘thin’ colours from the neutral end of the colour range.

The cold greens were created by blending Winsor blue with a touch of Payne’s grey, and using this as a ‘mixer’ with Hooker’s green.

Adding Texture and Effects

Once you are familiar with the core watercolour techniques, you can start adding textures and effects to your artworks. Using resist media is a key way of working highlights or achieving crisp white areas in your paintings, while sgraffito, drybrush and spattering are other interesting ways to add textural effects.
