Chapter Thirteen

Dani Raye

I hugged my folder a little closer to my chest as I reached the entrance of Turlough Enterprises. The company had an impressive setup, with the facility and outbuildings occupying several acres of land. Quite remarkable, considering they were situated not far from city centre. On closer inspection, the facility was likely a repurposed factory, but its proximity to the docks implied that it could have been used for manufacturing shipyard materials back in the day.

Harry was nervously blabbing away. I’d tuned him out on the car ride, as his chitchat was not only too quick to follow but also completely unproductive. His nervousness was his Achilles’ heel. The conversation jumped from client to client sporadically whilst mingling with current affairs. It ended up being too much for my brain to keep up with, and I stopped replying altogether. He talked regardless. However, I knew as soon as Harry set foot in front of the client, his nervousness would dissipate. He was a trained professional, and while my boss was chaotic around his colleagues, when he was pitching new business, something in control came over him. It was miraculous to bear witness to. It fuelled me with confidence, which was always important when trying to impress a potential new client.

Harry reached the front door before I did and opened it for me. At reception, we requested to meet with Patrick Turlough, the CEO. We waited for a couple of minutes before we were escorted to the meeting room upstairs. Turlough Enterprises was a building and construction company. So as expected, a few of the staff members looked a little unkempt. A cloud of dust practically followed them. I expected nothing less from this sort of company, but what I most definitely didn’t expect was who faced me on the other side of the boardroom door.

Matt stood at Patrick’s side.

Harry moved straight ahead to start the introductions and held out his hand. “Patrick, how are you keeping? And this must be your son, Matthew.” He turned and reached out to Matt.

“Dani?” Surprise was written on Matt’s face. I was sure I looked as pale as a ghost. “What are the chances?” Matt patted his dad on the shoulder and pointed. “Dani was at Ryan’s party on Saturday.”

Patrick seemed to recognise me. Though we’d smiled politely at each other at the party, I’d never actually spoken to him. Panic fuelled my insides, but I had to stomach it bravely. Harry would kill me if my lesbian drama ruined this deal.

“Small world,” fell from my lips, and I just about forced a smile.

Harry glanced at me excitedly as Patrick and Matt took a seat. Perhaps he thought this was a slam dunk since our children were friends, but he couldn’t have known just how volatile this deal really was.

Miraculously, I shut off my emotions and delivered my presentation like a pro. I was good at my job, but even I was impressed with my ability to separate my own inner turmoil from the job at hand.
