We anxiously waited for the announcement of the final scores, clutching each other’s hands tightly in anticipation. My head was so much in the game that I didn’t even care I was sitting next to Sarah. I squeezed her hand just the same as I would have with anyone else, and she didn’t seem to care if it was me either. The game was more important to us at that moment than any drama over guys in our personal life.

The ref’s voice echoed through the auditorium, calling out the final numbers. The loudspeaker bounced off the walls in a way that made it hard to make out everything he was saying, but we caught the most important parts.

“the Citadel Cats—winners for this match. Second in the national scores!”

We all leaped up in excited screams as Hailey and the rest of the cheerleading squad swarmed us to join in on celebrating. I got caught up in the rush of our win with hugs and high fives with everyone in reach. I didn’t think anything could bring me down in that moment until I noticed Chuck hanging back on the bench, not bothering to join in.

He had been benched after the second round, just as I had feared. And his overall scores nearly brought down the entire team.

I knew he wanted me to leave him alone, but I couldn’t stand to see him like this. I broke away from the others just long enough to reach out one last time.

“Everyone has bad days, right? Like you said.” He didn’t look at me. “Didn’t you hear the scores? We’re in the running for the top spot in the country. We’re going up against Daylight Academy! This is huge!”

My heart broke as he kicked his feet around, still refusing to look at me or celebrate with the rest of the team. Whatever had him down, it had to be pretty bad. Chuck would never miss an opportunity to celebrate his team’s victory, even if he hadn’t been the one to achieve it.
