Kelly didn’t know what to do with her hands, alternately wringing them then gripping them tight to stop the nervous movement.

Alone with Bear.

A few times over the last six months, she’d given herself this pep talk: He’s not for you, but you can be friends. So, about a month after he’d driven her home, she’d worked on drawing him into conversation, trying to get things between them back onto a normal footing.

She soon realized these conversations only left her in an agony of wanting, so she’d stopped initiating them. The one time he’d done so, about a week later, she’d shut him down. He let her have her way, and these days, they closed out a shift in tense, desire-filled silence.

Kelly looked up when she sensed movement.

Bear came forward then squatted in front of her. His thighs strained his denim jeans and cradled his forearms, hands dangling between.

He didn’t look at her. His head hung low.

“I’m sorry.” His voice was tortured.

It caught her off guard. “Sorry for what?” she breathed, alarmed.

“That I didn’t stop it sooner.”

Heart catching, Kelly reached out without thinking and wound a hand in the silky malt hair that brushed the collar of his plaid shirt.

“Ten seconds,” she said.

“What?”

She tugged on his hair, raising his gaze. She almost faltered at the burning whiskey eyes that met her own.

“From the moment they first touched me until you came . . . it was ten seconds. Which means you were coming for me before you were truly certain something was wrong.

“In fact,” she said, one side of her lips twisting wryly, “they have to be the stupidest hyena pack in the world to think they could touch me in your bar.”

“Anywhere.”

“What?” The word was a thready whisper.

“They don’t get to touch you anywhere,” he growled, enunciating each word.

“Bear,” she said his name on a gentle protest. “It’s not your job to protect me. Not outside this bar.” Please, please make it your job. “You’re my boss and,” she gritted her teeth, because how could she refuse him now, “my friend, but that’s not logical.”

“Shifters operate on instinct.”

“Even if logic makes more sense?”

“Yes. Some things just are.”

“Like what?” she breathed.

They swayed closer.

Kelly’s nipples tingled, and she was sure, if he looked down, he’d see them pebbled under her torn white tee. But then Bear muttered something that sounded like asshole under his breath and pulled back, shaking his head as though trying to clear it.

The move pulled his silky hair from her grip.

She almost moaned in despair.

Her fingers missed those strands. She wondered if his fur would feel as soft. “Will you shift for me?” The words were out before she could think them through.
