Connor couldn’t care less about the fireworks. He watched Lily’s face, the light reflecting off her gleaming skin, and the glow was all her own.

Big eyes. Big smile.

She looked happy. He liked giving her that.

When it was over, the smell of smoke and gunpowder filled the air. Families with small children began packing up and heading home. Lucas and Sofia returned, holding hands, and then he pulled her onto the slightly less crowded dance floor.

Connor had seen Lily looking longingly at the swaying couples. As much as the idea of her in his arms appealed, he did not like other people’s attention. He’d had to deal with it most of his life. His size drew stares, and while he’d learned to live with it, he didn’t fuckin’ like it.

Being here with Lily was drawing even more stares than usual. All those shining copper curls and that little green dress had been noted with interest.

Unwelcome male interest.

At least as far as he was concerned.

A vendor selling cotton candy walked past, and he watched Lily’s eyes follow. Connor’s shoulders hitched. He’d done a lot of silent laughing tonight. She clearly wanted more cotton candy but wasn’t about to ask for it.

He called out to the vendor, but the man didn’t hear.

Connor stood and grabbed Lily’s hand, pulling her gently up out of her seat and heading after the candy man.

A minute later, he handed the pink floss over to Lily.

Now that big smile was directed his way.

There wasn’t a lot he wouldn’t do to make that happen. His eyes strayed to the dance floor.

“Do you want to . . .” He didn’t finish the sentence.

“Want to what?” Lily asked, looking up at him sweetly.

Connor swallowed. “. . . Go for a walk?”
