Chapter Eighteen

He was being purposely and blatantly nosy, but Ked didn’t seem to mind...too much. He was scurrying through the boxes like a little mouse, looking for things he was sure would bother Sean, and Sean laughed as he did it.

There were a ton of books for the built-in shelves, and that was where Sean stayed for the first two hours, putting them away, sure, but also looking at his reading choices. That seemed to bother Ked some, but his worried glances over to Sean were all the confirmation he got for that.

There were some textbooks from the courses he’d studied to become a ranger, some mystery and suspense novels, a couple romance novels of the gay variety, and then...Sean had to laugh at another niche he discovered.

“Ked, is there something you need to tell me?”

Ked came over quickly, and once he saw the books laid out on the floor in front of Sean, he paled three shades and stammered, “O-oh, those? I should just throw those away.”

The occult books were all well-worn, like they’d been read many times. “Don’t throw books away, Ked. I’m not judging you, by the way. I studied this stuff for a while.”

Ked sat hard on the floor next to him and picked up one called, Way of the Sun and Moon. “I had this friend in high school, and she got me into this stuff. She’s still a...well, she calls herself a witch.”

“Then she is. Wicca is a valid belief system like any other. Practitioners call themselves witches because that’s what they are. I just didn’t know you’d ever studied it.”

Still embarrassed, Ked explained, “I was a gay kid, short, in a high school of much bigger and straighter guys. I got picked on some, so I thought, hey, if I could cast a spell on them, they’d leave me alone. It didn’t take a spell, just having a friend who hissed at them when she passed them in the halls did the trick,” he said, chuckling at the memory.

“Hissed? Really?”

Ked laughed with him and affirmed, “Oh yeah, hissed and spit like a cat. She also was hot, so they wanted her, but were scared of her too. Best friend for a short gay kid to have, believe me.”

He leaned in to kiss Ked softly, then grabbed the back of his head to intensify the kiss. They heated quickly, and soon, Ked’s head was lying on the books as Sean moved in over him.

“Put a spell on me, I knew it. My nymph has me under his spell.”

“No, this is just my inherent sexual prowess,” he teased, licking up the side of Sean’s neck.

Sean moved and sat again, pulling Ked up with him. “Fuck, this is getting harder as the day goes. Are we close to finished?”

“The rest of the books and my clothes are all that’s left. I finished the kitchen, but I have to go do a run. Wait for me?”

“Actually, I’m going to grab my pack and head to the campground. Are there any spots left?”

“Not sure.
