CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Tim sat on the ground, finally understanding how LadyCat felt in the video he’d watched during graduation.

Winning felt great, but sometimes it also left you exhausted. As Tim’s mana recharged, he felt a little better. It was like getting that first shot of caffeine in the morning. Once things got rolling, everything had a way of slipping into place.

“How about a little help?” Cassie threw herself on the ground next to him, hands charred so badly they’d stuck to her staff.

His mana was coming back in great big chunks now that they were resting out of combat so Tim cast Healing Storm and channeled the spell until the entire party was back to full health. Then he cast Mass Cleanse to make sure none of them were suffering from any lingering status effects.

Cassie slipped her staff back into her inventory and flexed her hands. “That’s what I’m talking about. Can’t open a chest when you have a staff for hands.”

The tank strutted toward the elaborate golden chest and gently laid her hand on the surface. “Pants of the Thoughtless Warrior. Apparently, no one can dodge attacks like someone who isn’t trying.”

“Ah, the drunken master.” JaKobi gave her a low bow and moved to the chest.

JaKobi placed his hand on the chest, and a smile engulfed his face. “Pants of the Boy Wonder. That’s right bitches. I’m fucking Robin.”

“Wasn’t Robin just the kid sidekick?” Lorelei didn’t look very impressed.

Looking shocked, JaKobi responded, “When we get out of here, I’m going to introduce you to a little show called The Titans.”

“Whatever, just admit the truth. You only wanted your own set of tights.” Lorelei laughed. “Lift those robes and show us what you're working with.”

JaKobi did his patented dance, and his robes vanished. “Maybe I’m Marky Mark reincarnated.”

“Wouldn’t Mark Wahlberg have to die for that to happen?” ShadowLily walked toward the chest. “Frankly, I hope that never happens. He can be the next Christopher Walken or Morgan Freeman.”

The mist slayer put her hand on the chest. “Belt of the Slayer, and Earning of Electrical Dispersion. Better stats and some extra lightning resistance. Not a bad haul.”

“I’m not going after that.” Lorelei pointed at Tim. “You’re up.”

Tim did his little strut up toward the chest. “Everyone who’s anyone knows you always want to go after a double dinger because you get something cool.”

He was lying through his teeth, of course.

After someone won the lottery, the next player up didn’t get shit. That was how it worked. Not everyone could hit the jackpot, or there wouldn’t be any more jackpots. Sure, now and again lightning struck twice, but it wasn’t likely. At the same time, he received a shiny new weapon last time, and his gear felt like it was in a really good place, so Tim wasn’t overly worried if he rolled a stinker.

Feeling lighter knowing the outcome didn’t matter at all, Tim placed his hand on the chest.

Item received: Bracelet of the Wandering Highwayman

Sterling Long was an infamous bandit who pirated the winding trail through the mountain passes of Vadadoom.
