Chapter Thirteen
1719, Aethyrion Era
Willoughbrook
Leo sent scouts ahead while the rest of them set up small camp. Considering a traditional campfire would have been all too idiotic and may have given away their precise whereabouts, illumination was provided by balls of light cast by Sandra and the sorcerers, balls brilliant enough that they could see sufficiently but not so much that someone else would be able to make them out.
While they waited, they helped themselves to food that had been brought along on the trip and food that Sandra and Victor had gotten from town while Leo and the others had been in with the sheriff, exchanging tales as they ate but careful to not let their voices get too loud. A timer indicated itâd be another half hour before the scouting mission was complete, a scouting mission that was being led by Antonius.
Brutus had had reservations about sending Antonius along considering there was every chance that he would just walk straight into the den of the enemy and reveal their location, but Leo had dismissed these concerns. It wasnât that he trusted Antonius on their side, but that he trusted Antonius was a smart man. If treachery was amongst his objectives, he would not do it so quickly and so suddenly, at least not until his child was safely returned to him.
And Leo knew that there was a child, since heâd done some investigation into Antonius before theyâd left Larys for Arys. In the meantime and until such a time he had no reason to think otherwise, yes, he trusted Antonius with his life.
Blackbeard, on the other hand, looked to have found new comrades in the form of the soldiers whoâd doused him in ale back on the Great Barnabas, something he seemed to genuinely have found amusing. According to him, the act was something his crew got up to for sport back on his ship. He sat with them now, the six soldiers, sharing tales of his many illicit sea voyages, of his many raids and duplicitous agreements, boasting of all of this with great pride.
Leo thought it amusing that he was, for all intents and purposes, giving the sort of confessions that would guarantee his place in prison once they returned home to Larys. But still, he was curious to hear more, not for any reason other than the fact that the pirate did have great tales to shareâ¦and tales seemed a good way to pass the time while they waited on the scouts to return with a report.
âThatâs not nearly interesting enough,â Leo said in response to a tale Blackbeard had just shared with his new friends, looking in their direction, all of their eyes reflecting the glows of the floating light balls around them in a way that might have had him mistake them for ghosts if he were drunk.
The tale, in question, had been about Blackbeardâs search for a flute whose tune could supposedly enchant the minds of all who had heard it, a flute that if it truly existed, would have made his life of piracy and his exploits vastly easier.
