Chapter Thirteen

One minute, I was sound asleep, the next, I was standing in the middle of my bedroom with my hands pressed over my ears. It only took a few seconds to locate the source of the panic-inducing noise.

Until the moment I saw her silhouetted in the window, head back, and her throat swelling with the sound, I wasn’t aware a dog could imitate a siren so accurately.

“Molly. What are you doing?” At the sound of my voice, she fell silent enough for me to hear the thin, distant echo of an actual siren carried on the night air. “It’s two o’clock in the morning. Go back to sleep.” Which was exactly what I intended to do once my adrenaline level dropped, and my heart settled back to a normal rhythm.

Except, now that she was up, Molly decided she needed to visit her favorite corner of the yard, and judging by the frantic nature of her gotta-pee dance, there was no time to spare.

“Give me a second.” I dragged a thin robe over my sleep shorts and tee and stepped out onto the back porch.

The full moon’s light was bright enough to lay long shadows over the dewdrop diamonds littering the lawn. A sight lovely enough to nearly make up for the heart-stopping moment of panic that had dragged me outside for a look.

Every so often, the pride of ownership bubbled up from some hidden nook of my psyche. All of this was mine. Well, mine and Catherine’s. But mostly mine.

“Freaking piece of crap, son of a biscuit.” A feminine voice touched by the music of the south floated over the fence.

My across-the-street neighbor, Neena. No one had seen her since the day we laid her husband to rest, and his killer attacked me in my own home. Rumor had it, she’d gone back home for a visit.

What was she doing outside at this hour of the night? I had to know.

Bare feet made little noise on the wet grass, and since David had oiled my garden gate, it was also silent. That’s why, while it was not my intention, I managed to sneak up on Neena, whose back was to me while she struggled with one of those manual push mowers, the type that looked like a set of wheels with blades twining between.

“What are you doing?”

She jumped about a foot and rounded on me. Not all the shadows on her face came from the slanting light of the moon. Hair uncombed, wearing a ratty tee and baggy shorts, it didn’t look like Neena had been putting personal hygiene at the top of her daily to-do list.

I felt bad, but I still wanted to know what she was doing.

“Grief, Everly. You about scared the life out of me. Why are you sneaking around in the middle of the night?”

“Why are you trying to mow your lawn in the middle of the night?” I countered. “And if you’re still in town, why haven’t you been answering your door? Have you
