âWell?â I ask as soon as we slide into the car.
âWell what?â Dylan asks. âThis seems like a fun college, donât you think? I feel like I could go here.â
âSure, sure, I bet. Itâs very collegiate. But what about the lady you were talking to? That had to be the one and only Nadia Volkov. Whatâs she like?â
Dylan takes a deep breath and eases the car out of the parking space. âReally interesting. Super motivated. Driven, you know? You can tell she just knows everything about this place. Like sheâs been here forever.â
âWell, the building is named after her, so that has to mean something. The mom I talked to said she was tough but fair and her teams always win everything,â I tell him, happy to have something useful to report. âI wonder if thatâs a good thing, or if that means she would do literally anything to win? Could go either way, I guess.â
âYeah, I got the feeling sheâs a no-nonsense kind of person. She was kind of hard to pin down, but overall I felt like sheâs just not a murderer. She was very straightforward. Told me all about AFTD taking over ARS, about how she wants to petition to get roller derby in the Olympics, everything.â Dylan shrugs as we stop at a crosswalk to let some students pass by. âShe wants it to be taken seriously, like basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, swimming. I like her, actually.â
Interesting. I kind of like Nadiaâs vision for the future of roller derby. I imagine derby going in the complete opposite direction and becoming a legitimate sport with college scholarships, little league teams, and Olympic gold medalists, just like everything else.
Dylan and I agree to grab a quick bite to round out this odd mid-day date somewhere between here and Wahoo Beach. I donât tell him about my hot dog appetizer, but Iâm sure he already knows.
I check the clock on the car radio. âThen I should probably get back and check on Ron and Stacy.â
âIs this the first time in your life you havenât gone to work â on purpose?â he asks.
I think back about it. I mean, weâve had some days where the whole Putts & Stuff has just been closed. Christmas, impending hurricane, the year with the moth infestation, that kind of thing. âI had the stomach flu once and just let the whole staff fend for themselves for a day once back in 1980,â I offer with a proud smile. âDoes that count?â
âBut youâve never just left someone else in charge on purpose for an entire day, have you? Just for a day completely off?â He chuckles and shakes his head at me. âI think you should try it. Youâll like it.â
I think back. No, I donât think I have. Iâve taken off a morning here and an afternoon there more often lately, working on my work-life balance at Dylanâs insistence. But even my half-days of freedom have been filled with doing things: surfing, biking, checking up on the twins, or fixing some wobbly or flickering or creaking thing at home.
