The stars are not for me to hold

But they can still light my way home

Tiberon’s fingers brushed against the heartwood stone nestled in his satchel, and he drew it out from its pouch. The stone was warm to the touch, its surface smooth and polished. He ran his thumb over the intricate whorls on its surface that almost seemed to shift as it pulsed. Its energy hummed in his palm, like a heartbeat echoing his own.

He could feel its power thrumming beneath his skin, calling to him like skysong echoing across the plains.

He could use it now—to seek clarity, to find the right words that eluded him. He could use it to shield his heart from further pain—to close himself off from the memories that haunted him, the longings that tugged at him like a tide.

Tiberon’s fingers tightened around the heartwood stone, and he closed his eyes, letting its energy wash over him like a balm. He could feel the weight of it in his palm—the weight of his own heart, heavy and aching with longing.

He could use it now—to seek out what he truly wanted. Maybe he could use it to find the courage to say the words that had been lodged in his throat for so long.

“Tiberon.”

Tiberon’s eyes snapped open, and he looked up to find Dredge standing before him, his expression unreadable.

Dredge was dressed in a simple linen tunic and trousers, his hair charmingly tousled as ever. His eyes were dark and stormy, and there was a weariness to his features that tugged at Tiberon’s heart.

Dredge gestured to the chair across from Tiberon with a nod of his head. “Mind if I join you?”

Tiberon’s chest tightened at the sight of him—the memories of their time together in Xifun still fresh in his mind. He’d known this moment would come—the moment when Dredge would seek him out and they would have to face each other once more.

The moment when they would have to confront the truth of what lay between them—and what might still be.

Tiberon forced himself to meet Dredge’s gaze and gave him a tight smile. “Of course.”

Dredge sank into the chair across from Tiberon with a heavy sigh, and for a moment, they sat in silence, their gazes locked on each other.

Tiberon’s heart was pounding in his chest, and he could feel the weight of Dredge’s gaze on him like a physical presence. He felt like he was drowning in those stormy gray eyes—like he was being pulled under by some irresistible force.

He had so many questions for Dredge—so many things he wanted to say. But the words were lodged in his throat like stones, and he didn’t know where to begin.

Dredge’s lips parted as if he were about to speak—but then he hesitated, and the moment passed.

Finally, Dredge spoke.

“Dardennes has another job for us. But I’m afraid you won’t like it one bit.”
