âI was seeing this society girl. I was her dirty little secret and I was fine with that. But a couple of the guys I used to run with caught wind of it and decided it would be cool to boost one of her fatherâs exotic cars.â
âOh no.â Bethany turned her head, propped herself up on his chest. He liked her there. He liked her on him, near him. And he didnât like anyone that much. What was she doing to him?
âI thought I had talked them out of it. Turned out I hadnât. She and I were in the pool house and we heard the alarms around the garage go off. She freaked. I panicked and threw on my clothes, ran out to see if I could run the guys off or shut down the system. See⦠That was one of my jobs when we boosted cars. Iâd take care of the garage alarms if there were any and because we boosted high end cars, I did a lot of that. We all had our own jobs. I could also drive like a motherfucker. Outrun anyone.â
âWhat happened when you got there? I mean, other thanâ¦â
âMy buddies were gone by the time I got to the garage. Two of the cars were gone. Another one had the driver side door open and a couple tools had been left behind. I knew the cops would be around soon and no one else had come down from the house, yet⦠I made sure the cars had my fingerprints on them. Same with the tools.â
âYou took the fall for it? Even though you had nothing to do with it?â
âI wouldnât rat them out. I knew whoâd done it, but I wouldnât give them up.â
âDid they get the other cars back?â
âOne of them, yes. The womanâs brother had taken it out that night. The other one, no. I copped to everything I could, told them whatever they wanted to hear.â
âShe didnât take up for you?â
âNo. I didnât think she would, but she made sure they didnât think sheâd been with me. She said sheâd been out for a swim and saw someone running toward the garage.â
âGod, Shane⦠They all suck.â He loved her vehemence on his behalf. She might be a force to be reckoned with and that turned him on.
âYeah.â
âHave you seen those guys since?â
âWhen I got out. Told them I was done. I did their time and I better never see them again.â
âAnd the girl?â
âTo be honest with you, I didnât expect her to tell the cops or her family that it wasnât me, but I was still angry at her for it. She came to visit me while I was inside, but I refused to see her.â
âIs she the reason your clientele is society?â
âHow do youâ¦? Never mind. Probably another of those articles or interviews. Yeah. It is. I know itâs petty. I know I should be over it and in a lot of ways I am, but making them pay me, a criminal, an ex-con, all that money for cake and frosting⦠Itâs my own poetic justice.
