I returned from my pre-dawn art session to quite the scene. Cora was standing on the front steps, teary eyed and waving her handkerchief as Arlo, backpack on shoulder, blew her kisses. It was like a World War II movie where the wife watched as her soldier walked off into the sunset, only it was sunrise and the soldier was off to the Federal Bureau of Investigations instead of war. Nate stood nearby, waiting to walk his friend to the harbor. It seemed as if he was trying hard not to be amused by the theatrics. I hated to admit that I felt more than a little relief after Arlo announced that he'd been called to start his new position a few days early and that he'd be leaving Frostfall in the morning. I just hadn't realized how early. He wanted to catch the first ferry out, so he had no choice except to start off at the crack of dawn. His announcement had brought a great deal of sad moans from my sister. My mom, on the other hand, had practically danced off to bed for the night.
Cora waited until she could no longer see the men before turning around with a final wipe of her eyes and heading inside. Huck and I circled around and went in through the kitchen. No one else was downstairs yet. Cora went straight upstairs to shower.
I got to work on a batch of biscuits to go with some scrambled eggs. Winston was the first to come downstairs. "Can't stay for breakfast, Anna," he said as he poured himself some coffee.
"Let me guess. Chocolate croissants?"
He put the pot down. "No, Alyssa decided, as delicious as they are, they're far too fattening. I'm somewhat relieved. They're very expensive."
"Ah ha, that is my theory playing out in real time, and I thank you and Alyssa for being part of my experiment."
Winston stopped the cup halfway to his mouth. "Huh?"
"Nothing. Don't mind me. I'm babbling. Why are you skipping breakfast?"
"Two baby harbor seals are coming in this morning. I've got to get the enclosure cleaned up. Alyssa said she'd make me a breakfast sandwich."
"It's going well between you," I noted.
Winston's massive head of blond hair always made him look younger. "It's going really well. Thanks for the coffee." He drank the rest and put the empty cup in the sink. "See you at dinner." I watched as he hurried out the back door. I wondered if I'd be losing a tenant soon. Alyssa had a sweet little cottage near Calico Peak in the center of the island. Winston didn't take up nearly as much 'air space' as the other more eccentric people in the house, but it wouldn't be the same without him and his constant parade of rescue critters. I was getting ahead of myself. They'd only been dating a few months, like Nate and me. Was I getting ahead of myself there too? I grunted, frustrated with my own psyche for putting so much doubt into my thoughts.
