Chapter Eleven

“Watch the hospital,” Rhonda urged Brad as she grabbed her purse. “I'm going to get Rita.”

“And go where?” Brad asked, confused. “It's not likely our missing killer is at the fairgrounds.”

“I'm not going to the fairgrounds,” Rhonda explained. “Look, Brad, you just watch the hospital. If Mr. Whitfield was involved with the CIA, it won't be long before some suit shows up to collect him. You know it’s true because you told Doc Downing to hide the body.”

Brad checked his watch. “I'm a little surprised a suit hasn't shown up already.”

“Sooner or later,” Rhonda said. “But right now, I suspect that our female killer has something to do with the delay.” She checked her watch. “Brad, I'm going to drive over to Helen.”

“What in the world for?” Brad barked.

“I need to see if our killer will follow me,” Rhonda explained. “I'm going to take Willie, Hazel, and Betsy with me-”

“Now hold on-”

“Please listen to my plan.” Rhonda grabbed her coffee and polished it off. “I need to see if our killer will take the bait or stay here in Clovedale Falls, okay? If the killer takes the bait, Rita and I might be able to trap her.”

“Assuming the woman Mrs. Baker mentioned is the killer, Rhonda. It could be we have a completely different killer on our hands,” Brad said, sounding frustrated.

“Exactly,” Rhonda agreed. “Or maybe we have two killers—or sisters—working together.”

“Sisters?” Brad asked.

Rhonda shrugged. “We'll find out. In the meantime, watch the hospital.”

She waved goodbye to Brad, rushed out of his office, grabbed Zach by his arm, and dragged the man out into a cool, beautiful autumn morning filled with the smell of chimney smoke, autumn leaves, and apples. “You drive.”

Zach followed Rhonda to his blue Chevy Silverado truck. “What's going on?” he asked, allowing the clean, crisp wind to wash over his face. “I hate to ask such a question on a beautiful morning like this. On a morning like this, we should be at the diner enjoying a hot breakfast and preparing to go on a nice nature walk...maybe a drive up to Clovedale Lake to go canoeing?”

“Well, honey, we're about to take a nice, beautiful road trip,” Rhonda promised as she crawled into the passenger seat and buckled up. The cab smelled of peppermint mixed with that infamous “new car” smell. The interior was very fancy, with a high-tech navigation system attached to the dashboard. Compared to Billy's old farm truck, Zach’s truck might as well have been a space rocket. But Rhonda liked the truck and thought it fit Zach's personality. Besides, what did it hurt if her husband-to-be bought a new truck that offered reliability? It's not like the guy had gone out and bought a Porsche.

Zach jumped into the driver's seat and buckled up. “Road trip?”

Rhonda glanced around. The front street in front of the police station—well, a log cabin pretending to be a police station—appeared lazy and silent. Beautiful, lush woods stood across the street, swaying back and forth in the autumn wind.
