Timetable for Love

When Barry heard McKenna laugh at their socially inept math teacher’s latest blunder, he turned around to check her out. He liked what he saw. He’d just transferred into the University of Utah, majoring in communications, after trying music and culinary arts at other colleges. He was new in town and trying to find himself. Things had been tough recently. The ski patrol had had to retrieve his dad from the slopes because of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. He survived, but Barry had had to be the strong one for his family, and it had worn him out. So when he met McKenna that day in class, he was emotionally exhausted. After class, she walked in his direction. They started talking and traded phone numbers.

She was very attractive, thin, with long brown hair, good skin and nice eyes. She had a fun attitude, like she was up for anything. I could see myself hanging out with her.

They started texting between classes. Math class met three times a week. It was not long before Barry asked her out for their first date. They went to a driving range to hit golf balls and then went to dinner. After a few weeks, McKenna made it clear that she wanted to be “boyfriend and girlfriend,” exclusively.

I hadn’t had any time for dates since I moved into town, so I was comfortable with that. We spent time together every day. It was nice to be back in the game.

McKenna brought up marriage a month after they started dating. At first she just mentioned it casually. Then Barry noticed that she had a stack of bridal magazines in her car.

When I asked her about them, she said, “I just like to look.”

Then McKenna started bringing up marriage more often.

When she first brought up marriage, I told her, “I’ll know when I’m ready. We’re not finished with school and I don’t have money.” I had a little over a year left. She said, “I feel like a failure because I’m not married yet.” McKenna was very strong-willed and knew what she wanted. She had a game plan for life, when everything was going to happen down to the month! She’d planned when she would graduate, marry, and go to grad school. This is not the way I live. What happens, happens.

We’d be watching TV and she’d go, “So I’ve been thinking, if we got done with school, got engaged at the end of the year, and got married right away in the spring, then I could apply for grad school.” When I didn’t give her the green light, McKenna would become emotional and tell me she just knew I was The One for her. She’d said, “You make me happy, it feels like it works, and I know what I want. I’d say, “I enjoy being with you, we have a good thing going, but I’m not ready to make a commitment. It may be the next check mark on your to-do list, but I’m not ready.
